One wonders what MacLean would've made of the modern Labour Party.

That's an interesting thought; I think he would have considered them 'reformists' i.e. reluctant to overthrow capitalism, believing naively that we could achieve socialism entirely through the ballot box.

Compare the way his memory has been airbrushed out of history almost especially after the love-fest that we have just had with the greatest display of mass murder that we have ever witnessed (WW1) - a war that was only ended by a revolution in Germany not long after the Russian one.

Back in the mid seventies, Strathclyde Uni' had a reciprocal agreement with the Star Club in Clyde Place. We would cross the river on a Friday for the lunch of champions, a pie topped with a hoat pea special(dried peas re-constituted with malt vinegar and milled pepper). Of course, there was a price to pay, Friday afternoon was given over to Folk Music. Numerous troubadours who had suffered for years over their music were determined you should suffer too. Hamish Henderson's ditties were most popular ie Freedom come all Ye, the John MacLean March, Auntie Mary had a Canary....etc. All that foot stomping and clenching of fists made it difficult to shovel the grub.

The dyspepsia arrived in reconciling socialism with nationalism.

Anyways, it was whilst Tommy Sheridan was in full pomp and exploiting every circumstance that John MacLean's final indignity arrived. Tommy was intent on marrying the winsome Gail, and he expressed delight on finding out the Kilt was MacLean tartan. Tommy expressed a Cupid's love for all things John MacLean. Surely, MacLean suffered enough, without Tommy gate crashing his legacy?

McLean was never a narrow nationalist in the modern sense.  Hey what have you got against folk music anyway?
