'Spectacular' Rangers atmosphere hailed by Spanish press after pulsating night at Ibrox

Steven Gerrard's side and Allan McGregor in particular - were also lauded for their character after playing the second-half with 10-men.

The "spectacular" Ibrox atmosphere has been hailed in the Spanish press after 10-man Rangers held Villarreal to a goalless draw.

Steven Gerrard's side drew plaudits for their resilience after being forced to play more than 45 minutes a man light.

Daniel Candeias was sent off for two bookings in the first period but Rangers dug in to secure a point that keeps them in the hunt for a place in the Europa League last 32.

And Spanish journalists left Ibrox impressed by the character shown by the the home side - and with a ringing in their ears.

National newspaper Marca wrote: "Steven Gerrard's team, partly thanks to an Ibrox Stadium that creates a spectacular atmosphere each time his team plays there, threatened Andrés Fernández on the counter attack.

"Equality was maximum. Everyone with their weapons. One to hammer, all heart and courage. Another with foil, thin and elusive."

They also likened Rangers' second-half rearguard to running into a brick wall.

Marca wrote: "Pum, pum, pum against a wall.

"The yellows had possession, control for most of the match, but Glasgow Rangers endured and scratched a point that leaves the four teams of Group G in two points."

Following Rapid Vienna's stunning win over Spartak Moscow, Rangers' result leaves the group wide open heading into the final round of fixtures.

Gerrard now takes his men to Austria next month knowing a win will be enough for them to progress.

I thought the atmosphere was good for the first few minutes and great for the last 15 minutes.

It was flat for the rest of the match though.

The last 15 mins. was when the team needed their energy to pull them through. Great how the fans sense these things.
WATP.
