[FT] Dundee 1 - 1 Rangers (Halliday 21)

How do you beat 10 men who sit in and are largely inferior players? Simple you move the ball quickly and accurately, you create width for good quality crosses and you exploit gaps by maintaining that width and attack gaps with quality forward movement. You fire in a few shots to draw defenders out. You overrun weak points but fundamentally you can’t win a game of football if you can’t pass, control or shoot. Whether it’s indivuduals or the team formation the evidence is this group playing in this formation are simply not good enough as they can’t do the basics.

The lack of experience is an issue and hardly any of our players have won a senior trophy at a big club. The fact we have Tav as captain is symptomatic of where we are as a team. Poor decisions, lack of consistency and a lack of genuine quality.

Arguably we have 4 players who would walk into this team in Murphy, Dorrans, arfield and Morelos but what is clear is the lack of quality and experience deeper in the squad.

Worral should not be getting a game over Katic, we only need one holding player in games like this and that should be Jack , having too many players who just seem to get in each other’s way on the flanks is an issue, and clearly we cannot rely on lafferty as anything other than a substitute.

The centre halves were atrocious at the first goal. The constant change in this area is damaging us. At least Katic is a goal threat and as someone said earlier we’d have been as well getting one of our centre halves playing as a centre forward as continue playing the way we were. We weren’t going to score. It was obvious with 25 minutes to go. Paralysis in the dugout and on the pitch is part of the problem.

Im coming to the conclusion the next phase is ship Tav and Morelos (reluctantly) in the summer to create a £15m war-chest.  If we’re going to bring in loans they have to be far better than to date. Kent gets pass marks for me but the rest are now showing why they got loaned to us in the first place. Ejaria is a good player but he’s started to bottle it, coulibally is limited in forward quality, and Worral should have his ambition fulfilled and get on the next train back to Nottingham. Some of these players look as if they are counting down the days.

Over to you Stevie G but ruthlessness is required now.

The defence is a bloody shambles.   all cbs are a liability.   it's a difficult problem to fix.

I haven’t kept track of Bates but we should have kept him. There was something to work with.  To think the money we got for him was spent on a season of Worral is galling.

The CB situation is straight forward for me. Worral out. Goodson and Katic and McAuley stand in.

I'm not surprised at all by today's performance or result.  Gerrard really needs to have a think about what we need in January, if we're to have any chance of winning the league.

We're short up front and our midfield, despite having the numbers, just isn't good enough.

How many times have we seen our teams haul themselves into a great position and then think the job is done and bottle it?
Both goals(?) today were instructive.
Haliday's goal beat a packed defence, a whole wall of defence. Why doesn't anyone take potshots from outside the box during open play?
Lafferty's goal that was flagged offside showed that when we coax a team's defence away from the 18-yd. box then get behind them on the break with a good cross into the goal area, good things can happen.
This side-to-side passing build up has to go. Too slow. Better passing into space(albeit scarce) has to be preferred to increase forward progress at speed, i.e. moving forward as a unit.
Putting crosses into an 8-10 man defence just will not work(especially when a lot of them cannot beat the first man).
Mentally, this bunch need woken up.

We aren't winning this league and it's about SG&Co building a team over at least 3 transfer windows that can win a league within a couple of seasons.

We've played very poorly in the last couple of games, it happens.

Yes, there are some worrying signs and fundamental gaps in the squad and in quality that need addressed.

We need to up our game again and at least perform well in Vienna, then get 3 points from Hamilton.

Passing along the back is ok if at pace and you vary with balls between the lines and you have constant movement in midfield. We are pedestrian with no movement in the more central areas and players getting in each other’s way on the flanks. Lack of balance and quality. Need another refresh in January but have to remember we were getting it right a couple of months ago. I suspect we need to sell and offload tho.

I never expected us to win the league.  But the manager and players should play to win the league.

The scum have had a very poor start to the season, by their recent standards and our away form and inability to break teams down has seen us stay behind them. We should not be losing to the likes of Livingston and Aberdeen or drawing with 10 man Dundee.

Hit the nail on the head with this statement. We should have got better back up for Morelos in the summer. Lafferty has been a massive disappointment since returning and never stepped up when he's been needed the majority of the time

Lafferty wasn’t a prolific scorer first time at Rangers. Second time is becoming likewise.
