Faux outrage only applies when Rangers benefit

Tom Boyd's Celtic conspiracy theories are ridiculous and here are the stats to prove it - James Black
Our Rangers blogger hits back at claims from Celtic ambassador that it would take 100 years to balance out the injustices against Hoops.

We're through the looking glass now as the paranoia across some sections of Scottish football reaches unprecedented levels.

After thinking we'd heard the last of it following the Chris Sutton-led manufactured outrage over the Old Firm game, it's hit new heights this week as Steve Clarke, Michael Stewart and Tom Boyd spouted the sort of outlandish nonsense that would see flat-earthers think it was mental.

Clarke got the ball rolling when he suggested Jermain Defoe should be banned for diving because Jordan Jones got a two-game ban back in October. You can almost see the merit in what Clarke was doing since his Killie side welcome Rangers to Rugby Park in the Scottish Cup this week. You can't blame the guy for trying to get his side an advantage although it was a pretty classless move.

The Killie boss has every right to speak up if he thinks there have been errors made although it begs the question of why he couldn't make the recent meeting between managers and referees.

Michael Stewart then took it a step further when he decided to fire up his Twitter machine and post the following: "Dermot Gallagher's analysis of the Dallas penalty incidents is lacking any real insight and makes incorrect assertions. It simply doesn’t stand any scrutiny."

Just to be clear, the Dermot Gallagher in question is former Premier League and FIFA referee Dermot Gallagher.

The retired official had appeared on Sky Sports News and said that Andrew Dallas had got three of the four penalty decisions right.

Quite why that doesn't stand up to any scrutiny, Stewart never made clear but - for a few hours at least - it looked as though we'd reached peak mental-ness.

Then Tom Boyd appeared out of nowhere with some of the most ridiculous stuff I've ever heard come from someone that wasn't an anonymous Twitter account.

The former captain and current ambassador for Celtic claimed it would take 100 years to balance out the injustices against the seven-in-a-row champions.

Obviously, I've been watching a different league pan out from Celtic's in-house conspiracy theorist but maybe there's something I'm missing.

Just looking at some of the numbers blows away the idea that there's a conspiracy to stop them winning the title.

Surely if the refs were all out to get Celtic then they'd have more bookings and red cards than everyone? Nope. They've picked up 16 fewer bookings than any other side in the division and two fewer than any of the other 41 SPFL clubs.

Red cards? Three less than Rangers.

Penalties? Before Saturday both Rangers and Celtic had been awarded five each - with Brendan Rodgers' side seemingly having a stonewaller turned down on a weekly basis'

Maybe there's something else that Tinfoil Tom had on his mind when he was talking about bringing in "neutral" referees - "neutral" being an interesting word choice from a Celtic ambassador.

He's surely not talking about the decision to send Alfredo Morelos off - later rescinded - in the opening game of the season for an offence neither the referee or linesman actually witnessed.

It's definitely not the call to disallow a perfectly good goal for offside at Dundee.

Maybe it was the handball by Callum McGregor in the box at Ibrox that everyone but the officials managed to see?

Could it be Daniel Candeias' red card in Paisley for blowing a kiss?

Eamonn Brophy's tackle on Ryan Jack or Ryan Porteous' potential leg-breaker on Lassana Coulibaly?

Of course not. Because that would have to mean acknowledging that there aren't men with rolled-up trouser legs and aprons running amok at Hampden.

Boyd must have forgotten the penalty that Andrew Dallas gave Celtic in December's League Cup final.

I'm sure if you ask fans of other clubs they can all rhyme off incidents where they think refs have got it badly wrong.

The continued pressure being put on referees by Celtic-leaning pundits and ex-players is getting ridiculous now though.

The fact it only gets amplified when 'mistakes' are seen to benefit Rangers is utterly laughable.

You would almost think Celtic were in a title fight or something and there's an Old Firm game not far away.
