WALTER SMITH has revealed his disappointment at losing out on Scott Brown but insists the Rangers fans can rest assured there will be substantial transfer activity at Ibrox this summer.

 

Sunday's Aberdeen clash concludes a largely frustrating season for Gers and the manager is aware he must make some valuable additions in the coming weeks to mount a serious challenge next term.

 

Deals to bring Alan Gow, Kirk Broadfoot and Jean-Claude Darchville are already concluded and they will join up when the squad regroups on June 27.

 

There will certainly be other new faces reporting at Murray Park too and while Scott Brown won't be one of them, Smith explains the club's reasons for pursuing other interests.

 

The managers said: "We are always disappointed to miss out on players we try to sign and this is the case with Scott Brown.

 

"It's not the first time it's happened and won't be the last, even if we are disappointed.

 

"It's not always about the specific transfer, in terms of the amount of money, it's about the fact we have to cover for quite a number of positions this summer and we had to take this into consideration.

 

"Everyone should keep that in mind and we had to be careful."

 

The silly season is already well underway and like every year Rangers will be linked with anyone and everyone in the coming weeks.

 

Today the press claim Osasuna defender Carlos Cuellar is Ibrox-bound but Smith has played down these reports and insists he is exploring a number of options.

 

Smith added: "We have a number of targets who we would like to fill those positions with, but as you have seen this week it doesn't always work according to plan.

 

"We played against him (Cuellar) and he is a good player but we have never been in contact with him or his club. So I don't know where this story has come from.

 

"We will try to bring in as much quality as we can.

 

"You can talk about managers all you like and tactics, but from experience the better player you have, the better level of performance.

 

"We don't have a list as such where one player is a priority. We have identified people we think can add to the squad and we will do our best to satisfy our needs.

 

"It's not uncommon for us to go in for a player and not get him, it's just this has been a very public transfer.

 

"We face up to that and move on with our plans for next season and we will try as hard as possible to bring in a number of players."

 

Like he said he would of liked to get Brown but he cost far too much and we can get a few players for that type of money

It's a big summer for our club and will be interesting to see how Celtic's Bertie Big Baws posturing will pan out in terms of their team next season. If they buy big, as it seems they meet, yet their team is not streets ahead of the competition then you would have to ask, is it all worth it?

 

My initial thoughts though, are that Celtic have a higher level of squad player to back up their first picks. This might become apparent towards the end of next season once injuries and suspensions kick in. I dont really see Celtic being that much better than us if we both have our first XI fit.
