The Glasgow Football Association has announced the revamped look to the competition, which has been in existence since 1887. This makes the trophy the second oldest in world football and matches will begin tomorrow night on Tuesday August 20. In the new format, Clyde will return to join fellow Glasgow FA members Partick Thistle, Queen's Park, Celtic Colts and Rangers Colts in this year's competition. Instead of a straight knock-out, the tournament will be played on a league basis, with each team meeting each of its opponents twice, home and away. This will give each team a total of eight games during the campaign, which has been designed to increase the competitive edge to the tournament The final will be contested by the two top teams in the group stage, taking place in April 2020. Celtic and Rangers Colt teams have to play a maximum of two players over 21-year-old in every match. Meanwhile two trialists will be allowed for each side in each game. In recent years the competition has been played at U17 and U20 level with this year seeing the return of first-teams Clyde, Partick Thistle and Queen's Park The Glasgow FA say the main objectives of the tournament are to allow clubs to positively impact their local communities, encourage school children to embrace health and fitness and to provide aspiring young players a platform to develop their skills. Looks good, as Clyde are now my local team, however being pedantic can Glasgow Cup games really be played in North Lanarkshire..? Just noticed we are playing at Dumbarton ? why isn’t Ibrox, or even Auchenhowie with the new stand being used for our home games?? Surely Rangers sides are 'Swifts', that was traditionally what we called the sides below the first team.
