Good headline stuff but it does suppose there is always clear blue water between "died from" and "died with" ..... which of course is often not the case.

Nor does it matter in any practical sense whether the number of deaths is 120,000 or 90,000. What matters is that the basis of compiling data is consistent and whether the rate of deaths from/with Covid are increasing or decreasing (and how rapidly it changes). And I think we all recognise by now that the way in which these figures are collected varies so much that any comparison between countries is totally meaningless.

excess deaths are probably the best measure.

It's still confusing. What happens if someone dies of a pre-existing condition that was in some way exacerbated by a journey through Covid (and they recovered from the Covid)? They didn't die of Covid but they might have lived months or years longer if they hadn't had Covid. That would result in excess deaths but wouldn't show on Covid figures. I'm beginning to believe it will be years until we know the real consequences of this pandemic - and even then it will still be argued over.

wouldn't that be covid killing them though really. I mean not literally but they would be dead because of covid.

Is that dead from or with or because of or as well as Covid ... like the universal cause of death is having been born.

I think, in the end, this is a puzzle without a clear solution and trying to find one is probably a fool's errand.

That will not stop the BBC trying :)
