The Spanish league have intervened saying Messi cant leave on a free transfer and the buyer will have to pay £600 million plus  this will probably be decided by the courts,

This is going to be interesting. Why have the league got a say in this?

Pretty obvious no one is going to be paying that kind of money or anything like it. They wouldn't pay it if he were a 20 year old far less 33. But I don't see how they can keep him now either. This isn't about money on his part. He has more money than he would need to live in luxury for scores of lifetimes so they can't buy him off.

He wants out and that's that. They're just going to have to accept that and work out something rational with somebody.

That must be illegal, how can a league insist a player remains within it just because he plays for one of their clubs?

It’s not illegal at all.  All player registrations sit with the national association.  As Bill says, they are merely interpreting what the contract says.

of course.... they do have an ulterior motive as losing Messi, after losing Ronaldo, leaves the La Liga’s TV rights deal revenues in tatters.

Understand their motive, but surely the contract is between the player and the club. How can a national association stipulate the fee clubs will have to pay? If Barca want to hold on to a player who no longer wishes to be there, then it is up to them to manage the situation. This will definitely go to the courts, then i can see him spending a year going through the motions and will leave for nothing rather than the 50-100m Barca could have got?

After nearly 20 years of service i'd have thought an amicable split could have been sought.
