SPFL: Contingency for incomplete season to be discussed by all 42 clubs

Recommended Posts

I seem to have caused some confusion and debate. Let me try and clarify.

I think there's a high likelihood the Championship, Leagues 1 and 2 and the steps in the pyramid below that won't finish the season and so the SPFL need to speak with clubs to try and agree what happens should that take place. I class part-time sides playing in the professional leagues as professional.

I also think there's a chance the top league in Scotland will be disrupted and also might struggle to finish. As such again the SPFL need to consult with clubs on what to do in that event too. My reading of things is everything will be done to keep the top league going and the other leagues might be sacrificed to ensure that happens. But if we've learned anything this year its stuff doesn't always go to plan and as full, country wide lockdown can't be ruled out.

Craig is correct, I think the SPFL's focus is currently the 'lower' leagues and what to do if half the sides can't play matches due to quarantine and testing issues.

And of course it should go without saying that this is my opinion based on fuck all inside knowledge simply a spare 20 minutes to while away on Gersnet. That'll teach me.

If the premier league is cut short it certainly won't be because of any material effect playing football in empty stadiums has on the Covid crisis, which is to all intents and purposes ... none at all.

SCOTTISH professional football faces being put into cold storage once again or entering fixture chaos if Nicola Sturgeon decides to put the nation, or parts of it, into Tier Four of her new coronavirus protocols.

The first minister has been setting out how the new tiered system would work when restrictions placed upon local areas in Scotland come into effect on November 2.

Once parliament approves the framework of the new system, restrictions would be imposed by local authority areas as opposed to the health board.

While everyone won't find out which tier they are in until next week, she said the Central Belt was approximately aligned with tier 3, with the remainder of the country closer to tier 2.

But these restrictions can go as high as level 4 - which Ms Sturgeon described as 'closer to a full lockdown' and includes a ban on non-essential travel and retail.

That would see also see all hospitality closed with the exception of hotels, but only for work purposes only.

And professional football even at the very top level could be affected too.

The small print of the Government ruling insists that all stadiums in the affected areas would be closed, with events not permitted.

Gyms would close too, as would visitor attractions and all leisure and entertainment - with restrictions on all non-essential travel.

The rules state that only 'outdoor non-contact sports' would be allowed, with no details of any 'exemption for professional sport' as is specified in tier 3 of her regulations.

While the matter still has to go through consultation and parliament, SunSport understands that the SFA and SPFL are already working overtime to see precisely what this could mean for them.

It hardly needs said how challenging this could be for football, of course, with the likes of Rangers and Celtic signed up to compete in European competition.

While there is the prospect of some local authorities being at Tier 3 and others at Tier 4, Sun Sport understands that this year's fixtures will not be redrawn whatever the eventuality.

Instead, matches would simply have to be postponed then either settled or replayed at a later date.

The SPFL announced today that they were contacting all 42 clubs for guidance on how best the board could gain control should they have to curtail the season.

The full list of Tier 4 restrictions is as follows:

  • No in-home socialising
  • Outdoor groups capped at six people from two households
  • All hospitality closed - except for hotels for work purposes
  • No non-essential travel in or out of level four area, with limits on travel distance or requirement to stay at home if necessary
  • No use of public transport except for essential purposes; avoid car sharing
  • Non essential retail closed (click and collect permitted)
  • Hairdresser, barbers and beauticians including mobile services closed
  • Public buildings, events venues and sport stadia closed to spectators
  • Worship open but restricted to 20 people
  • Weddings allowed with max of five people (or six with interpreter)
  • Funerals and wakes permitted with 20 person limit
  • Formal childcare open subject to targeted intervention which may impact capacity
  • Informal childcare for essential workers only
  • Schools open with enhanced and targeted protective measures
  • Colleges and Universities restricted blended learning
  • Driving lessons not allowed
  • Gyms closed, outdoor non-contact sports only
  • Leisure, entertainment and visitor attractions closed
  • Public services essential face-to-face only, and online where possible
  • Essential office work only, with work from home if possible
  • Outdoor workplaces, construction and manufacturing permitted

It's enough to bring tears to a glass eye I was out yesterday and and seen quite a few coffee shops filled with customers so there is no excuse to halt  a sport that is playing in empty stadiums.

Even in Tier 4 there would be no need to stop football, any more than there was when the EPL resumed in June with no adverse consequences. If football is shut down again it will be due to either incompetence or megalomania ... or since it's Nikla, very likely both.
