the elite youngsters are increasingly making their mark at the top level prior to that age.

There are Gilmours who are snapped up early but there are also Tierneys who develop later.

Tierney started 23 League games for Celtic (2015/16) when he was 18, ie. the age Kennedy is now (19 soon).

My comment was about the academy as a whole, not Kennedy.

Some may get their chance when the current first team squad is inevitably disassembled at the end of this season but it's important to remember that a large part of the reason for having an academy is to develop sources of future income rather than just raising players for our own first team.

Do you mean Andy Robertson, rather than Tierney? Robertson was released by Celtic when he was 16 whereas Tierney was in their first team squad at 17 and a regular at 18.

If you don't test the youngsters at a bigger stage, you'll never know how they'll cope. At other clubs they mostly have to, as the clubs can't afford to buy players.

Not least with no crowd there to put extra pressure on their backs. Dickson looked quite capable and Barjonas hardly let us down. Given that we have a neat points / goals advantage, we should utilize the options we have in full.

BTW, the fact that  we have no crowd putting pressure on our players may have been a factor why we are where we are with all those new players. For some may rise to the challenge and the noise, while others succumb to it.

I was responding to the assertion that the best players just get hoovered up by the EPL giants anyway, the implication being what’s the point. Some do, some don’t. Gilmour was a star at 15/16 and taken away before we could do anything about it, Tierney wasn’t but he eventually made them a huge sum of money.
