Yes and especially in the case of the upper classes who were seen as the leaders of men.  Although small in number their casualty rates were horrific and suffered proportionately greater losses in the fighting than any other class, which in turn changed the status quo at the end of hostilities.

 

Unlike the wars/conflicts of Blair and Thatcher,  the prime minister's (Asquith) son was killed, a number of cabinet members' sons were killed and in the immediate postwar, those who were expected to become leaders – particularly in politics and business – were no longer there.
