SPFL clubs asked to consider expansion to 48 member clubs

All 42 SPFL clubs are being asked to consider a proposal that would lead to an increase in the number of teams within the leagues to 48 over the next three seasons.

 

The additional teams would come from B teams from Rangers and Celtic with two teams from each of Highland and Lowland leagues taking the number up to 48.

 

In the proposal there would be no relegation from the bottom of League 2 for the next three campaigns and by season 2024-25 there would be four leagues of 12 teams.

Edit:  That said, I'm for the Colts teams in the lower leagues - we need to do better at the transition phase from youth to first team.

I can’t think of one HL club that would merit league SPFL status, let alone two. Buckie Thistle, maybe. At least some people go to watch their games.

To many teams as it stands the last thing we need is more ,let's face it apart from the old firm in Scotland the rest are only making up the numbers no more dandy Don's or tannadice terrors or a challenge from Edinburgh so the field is the Glasgow two and also rans .

Brora have been worthy champions for a few seasons but so were Keith and Huntly at one time and who knows anything about them now? There isn’t the population to sustain SPFL clubs. ICT crowds are pitiful. Ross County attract more than ICT but still not enough.

 

Elgin with a population twice the size of any of the HL towns get about 400 at home games unless in a decent league position when 600 - 800 turn up, 1,200 if in a realistic title winning position. Travelling between Brora and Stranraer for these numbers makes no sense.

 

Regional leagues might be the answer with the current SPFL 2 augmented and divided north and south.

Absolutely not for me. 24 full time professional clubs is more than enough for a small country like ours.

 

The rest should be in regional pyramids so the access to the top 2 leagues is still there but only on merit for Champions.
