SNP - the madness continues

This fits in with my point quite well.

Everybody finds it easy to suggest getting rid of the House of Lords or insisting that it should change.

Next to nobody is willing, and able, to articulate a better alternative.

Just opt for a unicameral legislature.

We saw during the Brext debate at how an unelected chamber can frustrate the will of the people and the elected chamber. It suits half the countries in the world and our politicians can find somewhere else to fade away and die.

Removing a brake on government, even a feeble one, is a bad idea.

Saying other countries do it is also a really lazy argument for it.

What gives them the right to put a brake on anything an elected chamber wants to committ to law?

The argument that the Lords makes bills better is in itself lazy and has been the only argument in it's favour for the last half century whenever a light is shone on that geriatric forum.

In the 21c either elect them all as most bicameral systemns do, or don't bother.

I can remember when they first started live broadcasting from Westminster, the house of lords was first and I think most people seen most of them as either sleeping or freeloaders just there for a subsidised lunch .?

Scotland alternative to a second house is the advisory groups, comprised of specialists in the statute subject.

Who's advice and recommendations they completely ignore.

I'd far rather have the backstop of the Lords than a small group of fanatics destroying democracy

Down in England it's about £9 for every item on a doctor's prescription as we know up here it's free well not exactly free the money has to come from somewhere.

But as long as jock gets his freebies they will still return these fucking morons back into office.

All in all, the House of Lords is a very good thing. How well it works at any given time is another matter altogether but the institution itself and the role it plays in parliament is far better than any alternative I've heard of.

If the only argument anyone can come up with against the House of Lords is "I don't like the look of these posh blokes" then God help us. Frankly, it would be better to restrict any criticism to a description of the proposed alternative but be warned, the best minds in the country have tried for many years to find a better form of upper house - and failed. So unless you're very special.....
