Lewis Hamilton and the Art of Convenience

Recommended Posts

One minute Lewis Hamilton is being criticised from all directions for effectively cheating. The next you know he’s back in BLM victimhood mode, being defended by all. All I’m saying is this was as convenient as it was predictable.

It's a standard 'celeb' reaction to criticism these days.

1. Do something wrong.

2. Receive public criticism.

3. Consult a PR person.

4. Claim you're depressed/victim of some ism or phobia due to having a protected characteristic.

Whether he cheated, despite the penalty he received, is debatable.  You just need to read the views of numerous drivers who said it was a racing incident and they both could have done more to avoid the collision.

But that aside, what did I miss? I saw the headline this morning that he had received racist abuse presumably on social media.  So either he did or he didn’t???

Will not know unless it is published.

Two points. First, it doesn't matter whether he cheated or not, since that's necessarily a subjective assessment. What matters is that his reputation was taking a beating. Compare it with diving in the penalty area - some say it was, some say it wasn't but it's the negatives that count and Hamilton was taking it from fellow drivers, rival constructors and the public alike. Secondly, I made no suggestion that the abuse was imaginary or exaggerated, merely that it was convenient. Whether it was genuine or arranged isn't for me to say, you merely have to contemplate the possibilities.

Anyone who thinks public opinion isn't deliberately manipulated daily should closely examine the Philip Schofield debacle.

He’s a racing driver and doing racing driver things.  I don’ t think a debatable incident like that will have much of an effect on his reputation.

As for the abuse, I think your reaction is just weird.
