The calm before the storm and the fifth pillar

I thought Middleton looked good in pre-season and a better prospect than Barker, Jones or Hastie.

I agree with this; he's looked quite bright.

Barker and Jones should be cut loose. (I still feel like Hastie is a youngster, but I don't think he is. We've not seen much of him at all; it's a strange one.)

I think having a pacy winger around can be useful. I remember when we beat Motherwell early last season, Jones started--out of nowhere!-- and had a key influence on the game. I think Middleton could be useful in some situations.

Saying that, I don't think he'll play much.

I'll be surprised if Middleton, Jones, Barker, Edmundson and Hastie don't all go this summer. We seem to be arriving at the stage where homegrown youngsters such as Patterson and Kelly will be preferred to previously-acquired squad players and that has to be a big step forward. This is the benefit of a universal coaching set up - youngsters graduating to the first team with years of familiarity with first team playing systems. I believe we are starting to see the future.

Well at least we played some very good football on Sunday evening it was a delight to watch we are going in the right direction, at least we never got thumped six _  two at home .
