Suffering???

They havent had to participate in the Eurovision charade, don't have to listen to BBC output and been spared the winter WC and the Nations Cup rubbish and been able to watch the seven torments of the EU,  - If that's suffering i'll have some of that.

Includes this reassuring insight:

If proof were needed that sanctions are not working, then President Joe Biden’s decision to supply Ukraine with advanced rocket systems provides it. The hope is that modern military technology from the US will achieve what energy bans and the seizure of Russian assets have so far failed to do: force Putin to withdraw his troops.

Maybe the futile sanctions will become so counterproductive that we end up surrounded by radioactive dust.

Seems to be straw grasping by the Grauniad. How do they know the sanctions aren't working? If you see the reports on Russian and Belarussian airlines for instance you will see a massive impact, including the fact that Russian airlines have returned more than two dozen leased airplanes to foreign lessors - reported by Reuters.

Yes the oil and gas payments continue for some countries but Russia is being forced to sell into other markets like China and India at lower prices than they would have received and the war is costing an estimated $900m a day, so most of the oil and gas revenue (which is shrinking) is going directly towards the war effort - reported in Newsweek.  Russia also has a reduction in wheat caused by the war and many foodstuffs are already in shortage.

The measures to protect the ruble are now backfiring as it is becoming a burden for the country's exporters and budget with Russia's central bank having to cut interest rates down to 11% from 20% as it tried to reduce this impact.

I would summise that military support does not equate to the non effectiveness of the sanctions - which are a bit hit and miss - but overall they have heped to constrict the Russian economy and will both prolong the war and impact Russia's post war recovery.

Well how would you know if the sanctions were working?

What do people think sanctions are for? The author thinks that it is to encourage Russia to abandon the special military operation. You appear to be saying that it is to hinder the Russian economy in future (to what end?).

Ffs, reduced to looking for truth in the Grauniad.

Straw grasping indeed. The playbook has been established now:

  • Economic and other sanctions as well as military support from the west are to be critiqued in depth
  • Genocidal actions by Putin barely register a moment's analysis.
  • Rinse and repeat.

Indeed. The Guardian has always been a filthy rinse for leftist propaganda and its current analysis of Russia's imperialist activities in Ukraine is as predictable as it is contemptible.

To limit discussion to complaints about the source is more like grasping at straws.

We should all be critical of our own government before we consider the actions of another. We can only hope to have influence over our own. We are also far more vulnerable to abuse from our own government.

In terms of a well established playbook you couldn't get better than persuading the public that some far off place needs help from the world police. After you have done that you can do anything you like to the poor suckers.
