Alex Lowry Signs Contract Extension

If a youth player is good enough, they should be in the first team squad.  If not, loan them out and see if they improve.

That’s just no solution at all. There is no way young players can achieve their potential without first team games, so how will you ever know if they’re good enough? Nor can we ever  develop a player trading income stream if there isn’t a conscious policy and established channel of introducing young players (signed OR youth system) to the first team. The problem in the past was twofold- we had no such policy and youth development was an inconvenient sideshow. That’s changing and we have to also expect a different outcome.

To get a high number of 'academy' or youth team players into your first XI, you need to accept a huge churn rate of hopefuls, at almost every age group associated with the club, and this irrespective of any 'clear pathway' into that starting side.

It doesn’t have to be “a high number”. It just needs to be a minimum number to sustain the first team and generate trading income. What it can’t be is zero.

To get any number into the 1st eleven, you require to accept a huge churn rate.

Hence English sides bring in young players who have survived the churn elsewhere.

I think that’s simply wrong.

Well, if you look at the much vaunted 'Ajax model' you will see that there is a huge turnover of players, and that this starts at almost the earliest age group.

There seems to be a presumption that every youngster that makes the first team is going to become a star player, like another Alan Hutton or McGregor.

In reality, we'll have our fair share of Bob Malcolms and Stephen Hughes, too. They won't be stars, but they'll play a role and play games. (I expect with our improved Academy even lesser players will be more technically gifted than those two... )

It's through playing games that they improve, but also puts them in the shop window.

King looks like a good player. Too soon to know if he'll be a star of the future, but why can't he at least play the odd game now? Why can't he be playing instead of Bassey at CB (let Bassey play at LB)?

Ajax indeed have a large number that don't make it, but they still actually play a substantial number of games for the first team.

Erm, I'm pretty sure you can be in the first team squad and get game time.

👍 Perhaps I misunderstand what you’re referring to as churn rate. I can envisage a highish turnover within the development group as a whole … but not necessarily within the elite who are transitioning into the first team, or indeed the first team squad itself.

Or do you mean something else?
