Hallelujah. The red ball reset can be carefully managed now with our fast bowlers (when fit) learning alongside one or other of the best. At least for the next few tests. Stone, Robinson and Archer, plus Woakes definitley need to use this time to learn what to do on flat pitches.

Broad and Anderson have been recalled to try to give the new incoming coach and CEO a positive start but all this does is delay the inevitable. England needs to move on, not live in the past.

And, of course, Root, the captain who dropped them, will be in the dressing room, which will be interesting

Agreed, but i think it was just plain stupid to drop both for the WI tour, especially when none of the three quick bowlers who are seen as replacements were fit. We were left with medium pace mediocracy apart from an occasional snorter from Stokes.

  • Rousseau changed the title to England vs New Zealand Test | Anderson & Broad return as Potts makes debut

England Team:

Zak Crawley (Kent), Alex Lees (Durham), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Matthew Potts (Durham), Jack Leach (Somerset), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), James Anderson (Lancashire)

Former skipper Joe Root will bat at four, while Surrey's Ben Foakes is handed the wicketkeeper gloves.

Potts, 23, has taken 35 wickets in his first six appearances for Durham this year and has been picked ahead of Somerset's Craig Overton.

He also gets his chance with fellow bowlers Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes, Olly Stone, Saqib Mahmood and Matt Fisher all out injured.

Crawley, Lees and Pope. So that’s Root (4) and Bairstow (5) opening the innings.

That is unworthy. Geoffrey Boycott rates all three but only, in the case of Crawley and Pope, if they get their heads down and stop donating their wickets to the bowlers.
