That's easy.

Take this Cassiera cat for instance.

He is Colombian, his agency is probably located in another part of Europe or the Americas.

There doesn't even have to be direct contact between clubs.

Agreement through an intermediary (agency), player released, legal attachment to the Russia league absolved.

Free agency signing, with a sign on 'bonus'.

If it even needs to go that far.

I am not sure on restrictions.

That only works if his current club release him.  And given they seem to be wanting 8.5 million there is literally no chance of that happening.

Expect Soutter will replace balogun in the squad. Can’t rely on Helander. Katic future is questionable. Leon King needs to be used. Sink or swim time for the lad. If young players are showing potential we need to give them games. Look at how Patterson turned out. If we can get a Patterson every couple of years we’ll be doing great. Lowry and King could go for Patterson money easily after some more games.

He turned 18 in January - hardly sink or swim time.

If there is a barrier to direct purchase, it can be agreed that the player could be permitted furlough for a specified period of time.

This would legally separate the player from the Russian Federation for a finite period of time. They work these kinds of angles in American sports, particularly baseball due to antitrust, and NFL for salary cap.

Euros are kinda tight assed though, so I don't know.

it was just an idea flung out.

Point is, where there is a will....there is an American somewhere to find a workaround ;).

The player, presumably, could buy out his own contract, which would make him a free agent.

The mechanics of this would be fairly straightforward, but might be seen as sailing gey close to the wind, as far as economic sanctions/no cooperation/etc with Ivan & Co is concerned.

If anyone comes across a trained in nation/homegrown status graphic or chart for our squad in Europe for next season can you post it in here please? I think we struggled slightly with it last few seasons having to omit certain players like Defoe. Then later Helander, Itten and Hagi due to injury. This is where the likes of Lowry and King will add a lot of value.

You are making a very bold assumption that footballing contracts of employment will follow others.  At the end of the day it is a very simple question of "who owns his contract" - answer, some Russian mob.  No idea of their financial standing but they have absolutely zero obligation to let him leave on the cheap.  And no amount of sanctions can force that issue.  Now.... what Rangers CAN do is lowball an offer - given he is out of contract next summer and given the sanctions situation, Sochi will know that by holding onto him they run the risk of losing him for free (there is an option on his contract for a further year but I don't know who has the right to extend, player or club).

A furlough, by the way, does not legally separate anyone from their contract - furlough effectively puts a pause on their contract.  With all due respect, American sports work in an entirely different manner to football.

Haha, the Americans are trying to take over the game in Europe anyway - and managed to fuck that up with the Super League nonsense - which was predominantly and American idea between the US owners of Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, plus the financiers being JP Morgan (think it was JP Morgan).

He could, that would certainly work as it is purely between employee and employer - but if they demand 8.5 million for him would he really want to buy out his own contract - and at what cost would it be ?  And, truth be told, would Rangers really want to get caught up in a transaction like that which would more than likely see increased press and scrutiny - eg, player buys out contract for, say 2 million..... Rangers pay player 2 million signing on fee..... I'd have thought the UK government would be all over that from a sanctions perspective in a heartbeat.

Would we have anything to answer to ?  Who the hell knows given the sanctions regime presently - I do know that we deal with sanctions stuff regularly in our company (oil and gas insurance) and we have increased our Enterprise risk for sanctions compliance because of some non-Russian entities having joint ventures with Russian companies - sanctions run very deep - and not sure Rangers would want to get embroiled in finding a "workaround"

They only really add value if they are getting game time - they don't take up a squad place as a homegrown player so they don't actually help in that regard I don't think.  If they are getting gametime (serious gametime) then a Defoe could have been in the squad at the expense of another eg, King is preferred in Europe ahead of Helander.... could drop Helander from squad and have Defoe in squad - otherwise those players dont help.

At least that is my understanding....

As a PS..... Just imagine how helpful it MIGHT have been to have Jermain Defoe in our European squad come the end of the Europa campaign......  the ifs and buts....

You are correct RE the game time thing, no point registering guys as homegrown if they aren't going to play as they just take up one of the 25 spots.

The rules state:

Quote

Who can be on List A?

No club can have more than 25 players on List A during the season, of whom at least two must be goalkeepers.

As a minimum, eight of those 25 places are reserved exclusively for 'locally trained players'. If a club have fewer than eight locally trained players in their squad, then the maximum number of players on List A is reduced accordingly.

What's a 'locally trained player'?

There are two categories:

1. Club-trained players  players who were on a club's books for three years between the ages of 15 and 21.

2. Association-trained players  players who were on another club's books in the same association for three years between the ages of 15 and 21. No club can have more than four association-trained players among their eight 'local' nominees on List A.

My understanding is we need to have as many first team useable 'local trained players' as possible or it limits us from registering a Defoe as you pointed out. So chucking the likes of Lowry and King into the first team mix and being able to use them in these games helps our squad management for Europe massively. Clearly they need to be good enough to play for us to compete. Last season the only first team useable 'local trained players' we used were McGregor, McCrorie and Patterson (who we then sold). McGregor may not return for next season. Ideally we need 4 of these. Lowry, King, McCrorie(or Jay Hogarth) and AN other. McCann and Weston don't yet qualify.

Jack, Arfield and Wright would be classed as Association-trained players. That brings us to 3 in total. Soutter will count towards that for next season reaching our limit of 4.

Given how many of our squad need to be 'game time managed' its important we can register as many spots as possible.

These rules are a big driver for why the likes of Chelsea, PSG, Man U, City, Bayern etc hoover up lots of youth players.
