Dick Advocaat's formation

Recommended Posts

Naturally you'd think the little general would have opted for a standard 4-3-3 being Dutch n all, but I've been reading lately here and there, that he often '' favoured '' an asymmetric 4-4-2.

Is that right?

I just remember the guys playing some beautiful stuff, the link up play between De boar and Ferguson was mouth watering at times.

Any of you remember how he lined up and with what players?

Remember it more as a fairly fluid 4-2-3-1 for the most part.

Flat back four with the likes of Ferguson and Ricksen as holding players and various attackers used with de Boer, Flo, Mols etc as a focal point and others such as Caniggia, McCann, Lovenkrands and Arveladze in wider areas.

The likes of Tugay couldn't even get a regular game! The midfield was probably strongest. Reyna Ferguson Albertz RDB Ricksen GVB and Kanchelskis. Amato Mols JJ.

Porrini Hendry Amo and Numan at the back.

Remember when DA played Tugay at sweeper. We thought he was off his head but our current Manager Mr Van Bronckhorst scored the winner in Monaco. We played Bayern off the park twice too. Other than Moscow at Ibrox in 92 I think the most gutted - European wise outside the two Europa/Uefa final defeats - is the nights against Bayern. Absolutely robbed at Ibrox and battered them over there hit the post about three times. Aye I still hold a grudge :D

and why oh why did Mols choose to avoid landing on Khan? resulting in finishing him as a prolific striker for us.

My recollection is 4-4-2.

Midfield of Kanchelskis, Ferguson, Gio and Albertz.

In his first season it was Wallace upfront with a combination of Johansson, Amato and Guivarc'h. Mols was used instead of Guivarc'h in his second season.

Did Advocaat play Ricksen in the midfield? I thought he was mainly used as a right back by him.  I think that there were a few times in Advocaat's last season that he played both Ross and Ricksen but it wasn't the norm, as far as I can remember.

Aye, I was looking more towards the end of his time and got mixed up with 2001 and 2002.... ;)
