Nike takeover Umbro - what will it mean for the fans

Recommended Posts

Now that Nike have taken over Umbro what will it really mean for the fan who wants a strip from a shop.

Will we have the Nike brand shirt next year - more expense for us all?

Will it make it available in a wider scale?

Any thoughts Gents?

means nothing to us. umbro will keep thier own identity and will maintain their own hq and basically operate as an idependent company. umbro contacted rangers to know if they would honour their current shirt deal if the sale goes through.

begs the question why nike bothered buying them in the first place.

If Umbro are proftable then Nike have bought them merely for the profit and see them as being a company that can continue to do well without having to properly merge the companies.

Growth by acquisition at its best and without looking for synergy. Probably is just the case that the asking price was a very good one at the profit levels being achieved by Umbro - also gives Nike an increased market share.

A bit off subject but i love the Adidas Puma story about the two brothers who had a fight, Adi and Rudolf Dassler. Rudolf set up Puma just a bit down the street. Seemingly to this day their offices are almost next to each other in a small german town.

Adidas,Reebok and Taylor made are the same company.

Puma were taken over by PPR which also has the Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent

Both Dassler brothers, which are the founders Adidas and Puma, were in the nazi party. It's bit a strange, especially if you know Jesse Owens story and look on the post war years of their business...
