On the scrounge for sponsorship, a Bear runs the desert!

Recommended Posts

I know its a bad time of year in many ways, but I'm on the scrounge! Short version is that I'm taking part in this year's Marathon des Sables and am hoping to raise some money for Yorkhill Children's Hospital who do some amazing stuff for kids and are the only hospital in Scotland to offer many of the services and specialised kit to save young lives.

If anyone would like to donate a couple of quid to me, it would be much appreciated and make a big difference.

Am hoping to get some signed kit to auction/raffle if I can, but seem to be running out of time as usual!

Thanks for reading :)

In a little over 10 weeks I'm flying out to Morocco to take part in this year's Marathon des Sables, as many of you know already and are probably sick of hearing about by now! This is a 150 mile footrace across the northern Sahara desert with competitors doing 6 or 7 days of running on stages whose distance varies from 13 miles up to 54 miles on the long day. The organisers provide water at checkpoints every 7 miles or so and an old-school canvas tent at night, but apart from that, you're on your own which will mean doing the whole thing with a 12-15kg rucksack on my back. The race starts on Sunday 29th March and finishes on the 4th April.

In between working & changing nappies I've spent the last year training. As well as my long wobbles round the Pentland Hills, I took part in a few marathons and a couple of ultra-distance races with my trusty rucksack. Over the next few months I'll be building up my hill runs to take in 20 miles on a Saturday and the same again on the Sunday, all done off-road in the Pentlands or Lammermuirs.

As this is something out of the ordinary and a bit "different", I want to take the opportunity to try and raise some money for a charity which has some special significance to me. I've chosen to run for Yorkhill Children's Hospital in Glasgow who cared for my nephew and ultimately saved him after he was born with a life-threatening illness. Each year over 150,000 children from all over Scotland need to go to Yorkhill for care & attention as they are are able to provide specialist services, staff & equipment which other NHS hospitals can't.

I've set up a Justgiving webpage with some more information on it which also allows you to easily make a donation. The website address is: http://www.justgiving.com/mikemds

Anything you are able to donate will be greatly appreciated by Yorkhill & I, not to mention the fact that the donations will give me another very good reason to complete the race when I'm going through one of the inevitable low-points I expect to have in the desert.

Every penny raised will go directly to Yorkhill as I've paid for the race fees, kit etc out of my own pocket.

Feel free to send this email on to anyone you think might be interested in donating a pound or two to a very worthwhile cause.

Thanks for taking the time to read this,

Mike Adams.

I'll be keeping a blog of my final training & prep as well as uploading reports from the desert as the race progresses here: http://web.mac.com/mikeandtreen/Site/Blog/Blog.html

The official website for the race is: http://www.darbaroud.com/index_uk.php

Ps. Not in a position to help out atm (not long finished uni and "betweem jobs") but assuming that changes soon I will have another look.

Good luck mate. Must be a very determined character.

How did the Celtic job go ?

How did the Celtic job go ?

Emailed the guy whose contact was given to see what was going on. He said they were still in the process of shortlisting and would get back to me when they had made a decision.

That was around a month ago so thought I may not hear anything til the new year (because of festive holiday period), but silence since then. Hate it when they don't take the time to get back to you, especially when you've made the effort to contact them. Rude bastards. Club with no class!

Was up in Aberdeen on 9th for interview for lecturing job at RGU. Never got it, lack of experience and interest in the health side of things I reckon though they're taking their time getting back to me. Sports and exercise science job, quite a broad subject with my main experiences in elite sport (Falkirk, SRU amongst others). Got a weird "vibe" there, like they'd forgotten the "Sports" part of the course title. They were solely interested in public health and related topics, so I probably wouldn't have enjoyed that.

Got an application in with Bath RFC, deadline end of the month, for same role I applied to with Celtic. Looking at a Phd at Loughborough uni working with Leicester FC, though gotta do some reading up on the topic.

Plenty to apply for, but a bit frustrating atm. Left Glasgow to come home for various reasons that ultimately amount to financial reasons. Thought i could save on rent while looking for my first real career move having finished uni, yet there aren't even any bar, office or bog standard jobs to tide me over here while I look for something longer term. :(

Sorry for the rant.
