We scudded Fenerbahce in Turkey, whereas Lyon scraped a draw. I don't think a bad night against Lyon means we're not close to these other teams.

We drew with Spurs (and were unlucky not to win) and only lost to a goal in injury time against Man Utd, so we're not that far away from that level. The difference between us and Man Utd reaching the final was that they got the clear penalty decision and red card against Athletic Club and we didn't.

Yeah, we would have been straight through to the group stages. That missed penalty/letting in the goal were real sliding doors moments.

That would certainly be standard for this kind of VC deal. Everything has pretty much been agreed and there's a period of due diligence to be completed prior to it being signed and sealed.

Legally they won't be able to. There will be something in place to state that any contracts over a certain value will have to be agreed by Newco, the company that will be buying the shares on behalf of the 49ers/Cavenagh.

It's not really 49% though. A chunk of that will have no say. There's the Easdales, C1872, the shares that have been banned, the punters etc. But yes, effectively the 51% will control the board and have their say on virtually everything. Some existinng board members may hang onto their seats short term as part of the sale agreement, but their influence will be minimised. I get what you're saying about Gerrard though. I guess he's a big name for the new guys and we're of relatively limited attraction for other big names. We're not going to get a Nuno Espírito Santo, if he were to become available, for example.

The new owners would be calling the shots. The current board won't be able to do anything major without their say.

Everyone is positive about a bright future under our new owners. It would be a massive own goal to go back 7 years and reappoint Gerrard. There's nothing new about that.

And I don't think we can be "financially sustainable" by selling the SPL top scorer for £500K.
