From the moment Gerrard arrived at Rangers there was incessant reference to his ultimate destination at Liverpool, the inference being that Rangers could only ever be a stepping stone on his march to a far greater destiny. It always irritated me that this universal truth was meekly accepted by every Rangers fan, not because aspiring to manage Liverpool was a bad thing in itself but because our opinion of our own club had apparently slipped so much that we were happy to be used as a tool in the pursuit of someone else's ambitions. Maybe now the fans of Aston Villa can take their turn to be the road under Gerrard's feet.

There are people out there who would still see managing Rangers as an end in itself. Hopefully one of them will be chosen to be our next assistant manager, so that the meek really might inherit the Earth one day.

I honestly dont think it would be any different with any other manager these days, even Scottish ones. If a EPL outfit come their way they will take the job. While I dont like it either, we are just a big fish in a small pond and the EPL is a much richer and better league. That's just the way things are with money nowadays. In Souness' era we signed several England internationals for small money. They would cost £50m a pop today, its not a level playing field now. We are now paying £7m for a Liverpool reserve who hadn't played a competitive game for them.

I wonder who the other two candidates were, and if they are serious candidates. I'm surprised at how little we've heard of anyone except Gio. Gio's record isn't so good that it should be a coronation. One incredible season followed by two par for the course seasons at Feyenoord and then a poor season in China.

A friend of mine whos brother works at Ibrox (not on the football side) said John Terry was on the shortlist. Not sure if thats the rumour among the staff or an actual inside line on things.

  3. Technically the first goal I saw scored for Rangers was an own goal by Stevie Kirk in the 1987 League Cup semi final at Hampden. The first by a Rangers player was by Robert Fleck in the same game, the final score was Rangers 3 Motherwell 1. I had to look up the scorers as it's so long ago.

In respect of the deal, I guess it could be backloaded, with any overrides based on turnover being cumulative to try and prevent us from bailing on the deal early. I doubt that they are not meeting what was contractually agreed in regards to payments.

Yes but surely the payments would be accrued into the period to which the sales relate. I dont doubt that they are fulfilling their contract but they made a point of speaking to the fans about the deal through podcasts. In the one I listened to (can't remember which) they said £4m was a minimum annually and that it could rise up to as high as £8m depending on sales. That seems like a lie as revenue is only £4.3m and sales must have been higher than normal due to 55.

  5. Im new to the forum, just registered due to the speculation about Gerrard.

My vote would go to GVB he's played for us so has understanding of Scottish football and also had a good learning curve (4 years as assistant at Feyenoord then 4 years as manager). He also understands the dutch style of passing football which is similar to how Gerrard has us playing, its better that someone comes in and doesnt try to change it too much.

Also I'm surprised so many people think Beale, I honestly don't think he has the leadership character to be a manager. he does have the intelligence but you need more than that to be the top man.
