  1. Maybe he'll do as well as Dylan McGeoch has done. The thing about being 17 is you're pretty stupid, that's compounded by not realising you're stupid. Dundee Utd have for a long time been recognised as a club where young players can develop. Some do, some don't, they aren't Ajax and they don't have a magic wand. Being at a club where no one expects you to win anything, where making the top six is seen as success and actually winning a trophy will see you given the freedom of the city and a public fellatio from Jim Spence it's an easier environment for young players to progress. Ibrox isn't, even winning the league you can expect little praise from many in our support, winning isn't expected it is demanded and woe betide any player, young or old, who doesn't meet our exacting standards. Telfer has moved up a division and to an easier club to play for. It might prove to be a smart move, it might not, time will tell. However it's his decision, if he feels he should be in the first team by now and is pissed off because he's not then that's his decision, no one else is to blame for that. Graeme Souness, left Spurs at a similar age because he felt he should be playing first team football, he later admitted he was wrong. Telfer is no Souness. It'll be interesting t see if he goes into the Dundee Utd first team.
  2. I've recently discovered not all people from Renfrewshire are to be avoided. It's quite the surprise I can tell you.
  3. Yes, that's my recollection of it too. I'm not sure the 'government' can be blamed for that. Whilst a lot of school teams did cease many didn't. My secondary school did but the local RC school didn't, they produced four boys my age that went on and played senior and we didn't produce any and I'd say those two factors are connected. I notice the successor of my alma mater won the schools trophy recently, so indeed the resurrection is complete. PS I wonder if there is meltdown on German football messageboards this morning after losing to Scotland! The shame of it.
  4. It was Sheils who developed McKay at Kilmarnock, that was part of the reasoning for him going there. Sheils as a manager is all about getting the ball down and playing passes, his preferred style should suit a player like McKay.
  5. No, no, no, that was because McCoist is a terrible manager, robbing the club and playing anti-football, Barrie McKay would Messi if McCoist was someone like Malky McKay. Get with the programme man.
  6. Yes, since we're outing ourselves i'll join you, I'd take him back in a heartbeat too. Ferguson knows what it means to play for Rangers and he could be the making of Lewis MacLoed. Plus, if nothing else he was an outstanding footballer.
  7. I'm friendly with some Morton people and they weren't taken with McKay at all, some work ethic issues they felt.
  8. When did the 'government' take football out of schools? From what I can see schools football seems to be getting played http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/ssfa/football.cfm?page=1392 It's the clubs and the SFA who are responsible for the pitiful state of football in this country, no one else. Money and opportunity squandered again and again. Rangers are as culpable as anyone, more than many indeed.
  9. Four keepers in the squad, what's the thinking there? That's as weak a forward selection as I've seen. What happened to Johnnie Russell and Jordan Rhodes and how come Snodgrass doesn't get in the squad?
  10. So when did you guys all become fashion designers? Cheap looking? Of course they're cheap looking, have you not seen what the great proletariat wear? Open your eyes men.
  11. Yeah, I'll bite, what's wrong with them?
  12. I'm not having a pop at you I just don't know what point you're trying to make. Andy Steel mentioned Liverpool as a side to emulate from a playing perspective, I would agree with that. But let's not kid ourselves they're producing their own players, Gerard was the last one of any note. We're in the free transfer market, not cherry-picking the hottest teenagers from Championship academies and making them overnight millionaires. Some perspective please.
  13. As often happens I've no longer an idea what point you're trying to make now. Whatever age he was Liverpool still bought him for a shitload of money. Most people would agree Liverpool play good attractive football although with the money they've spent I don't think it's too much to expect. Flanagan has half a season under his belt, Liverpool's defence has cost them the league title, their defending is naive at best, Flanagan might go on and become someone special but it's far too early to tell. Either way comparing them with Rangers is farcical, we operate in different galaxies now.
  14. Sterling was bought for £5 million from QPR. Flanagan's a fullback, defence isn't their strong point from what i've seen.
  15. To be fair Southampton are the exception rather than the rule. Liverpool have bought all their exciting players, they are good to watch though. I'd have put Swansea onto this list although it's all gone a bit pear-shaped there of late.
  16. No, no, no. It's just been so long since since his blue period started you can't remember when he was a beacon of frivolity, humour and reimagined country music. In those days he used to write about Stephen Whittaker's lack of hair, you can't even write about that anymore.
  17. I'd point out that only last August Kenny Miller scored a cracker at Wembley and looked as good as he's ever looked. I can see where McCoist is coming from on this. McCoist want's promotion from Div 1, pure and simple. Forget about rebuilding, buying for the future or blooding youngsters, McCoist want's promotion no matter what. To be fair on McCoist all Rangers managers are judged on today, on what they achieve just now, not on what might happen 12 months or 24 months from now. If we don't start next season well McCoist is toast, he knows that better than anyone. So is Miller better than Little because that's basically been the swap. I've not seen him play since the match against England but on that evidence the answer is yes, he is. Can Kenny Miller lead the line, help the dressing room and score goals in Div 1, again I'd say yes. Even in his twilight years he's good enough for this level. Could his experience help Nicky Clark's game, again I think so. Can Miller link with Daly, yes, clearly having a mobile instinct player around will benefit Daly. I understand why there is dismay at this and also the general unhappiness many have with Ally as manager, however I can't see why this is a 'bad' signing. We're not competing for Europe, we're not chasing Celtic, we're trying to win Div 1. Plus he's free.
  18. I look forward to the day Andy pens a cheerful piece again. I fear we've a while to wait though.
  19. Without being funny is there any actual evidence of that? The term 'winning is a habit' is a cliche and a nonsense, if it was a habit the same team would win everything. We've discussed this before on here but the last Scotland under 17 side to achieve anything notable was jammed full of Celtic players none of who went onto achieve anything, most never even made an appearance for their first team. Winning at that level shouldn't be the goal, creating players who can step up to the first team should be. We get to caught up in the results.
  20. Is there any evidence that winning anything at that level produces any benefit to the players involved? It would be nice to win but I'm far from convinced the Tims have a good youth system.
  21. I'd comment on this but I'm waiting to hear what Frankie thinks first so I can agree with him.
  22. A fine piece. I admire your doggedness on this. Edit - Point removed as D'Art wasn't responsible for it.
