  2. By DAVIE PROVAN

I’VE a pal who followed Celtic to Stranraer last weekend and won’t be going to another away game.

Can’t blame him. Flares launched, sectarian singing, vile language.

Makes you wonder if Peter Lawwell will ever win the battle against that rabble who masquerade as Celtic supporters.

The club identified three of those responsible, banning them indefinitely from games.

    But how does that work?

How does Lawwell stop the same idiots attending Celtic’s next away game? He can’t.

Unless our clubs take a different approach to fan behaviour we’re all stuck with these halfwits.

Ask yourself. Would you sit in the cinema beside a drunk who’s effing and blinding?

Isn’t football supposed to be an enjoyable day out?

What other part of the entertainment business would suffer the behaviour we see inside our grounds?

Put it this way. Would you have taken your wife and kids into the away end at Stair Park when there were flares flying?

It’s no surprise attendances are tumbling in Scotland. For every foul-mouthed bevvy-head we let into the ground there are others staying away because of him.

It’s been going on for so long we’ve become used to it.

But the nasty minority are slowly emptying our grounds, to the extent Glasgow Warriors now get bigger crowds than some of our Premiership clubs. I get that.

At Scotstoun you don’t need a flak jacket to avoid missiles. You can share a half-time pint with rival fans without worrying about a sore face.

Can you imagine the scene if they’d been selling half-time booze at Stranraer last week?

The anti-social mob are not unique to Celtic. Recently, Morton supporters found themselves sheltering from coins and golf balls thrown from the upper stand at Ibrox.

One young Ton fan was narrowly missed by a Buckfast bottle. Every chance he could have been killed with a bit of bad luck.

Rangers still have their own poisonous element. Recent sectarian abuse of Hibs boss Alan Stubbs proves the nasty element within the Ibrox support is still flourishing.

When George Peat was in charge at the SFA he promised sectarian chanting would be punished by points deductions.

But how many points have been deducted since? A big fat zero.

The law of averages dictates that Celtic and Rangers face the biggest challenge, but other clubs have their work cut out.

In the capital, Hearts still have problems, despite Ann Budge’s makeover. In what other sport would Neil Lennon be attacked on the touchline by a half-wit?

More recently we had Budge apologising to Ross County after a Staggies supporters’ bus was attacked by Hearts’ “Young team”.

The teenagers responsible were banned from Tynecastle for life, but you can bet they’re still causing mayhem at away grounds.

You only have to look at Italy to see the where we’re heading. Attendances in Serie A have plummeted because Ultras have been allowed to take over stadiums.

Decent supporters have turned their backs on the game because of intimidation.

At the Turin derby last year nine people were hospitalised when a flare was fired into the home support from Juventus fans.

With three fans seriously injured it was left to Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri to sum up the feeling saying: “Only a madman would take their kids to a football stadium in Italy.”

Here, SFA chief executive Stewart Regan was bang on when claiming someone could die unless we get flares out of our grounds.

Recognising the war against the neds is being lost, Regan wants a Strict Liability policy with clubs held directly responsible for their supporters’ behaviour. That would require the agreement of the SPFL who weren’t slow to oppose the idea.

Board member Mike Mulraney rubbished Regan’s proposal claiming it wouldn’t work. Unfortunately he didn’t have a clue what would work.

For certain, no amount of fines will make a difference. The slap on the wrist routine has failed miserably.

Points deductions are the only means of making the dimwits see sense. If they know a launched flare could cost their club the title, they might think twice.

At the very least it’ll see the decent majority self-police the neds instead of turning a blind eye.

If Scottish football is ever to become the family sport it should be it needs to fumigate our grounds of the halfwits.

Strict Liability is worth a try.

Youve a pal who followed the jungles davy? All your pals follow the jungles....

  3. This nonsense about throwing money at it needs to stop, Nobody is asking for that. We are spending near on £2m on dross. We don't need to spend more ,we need to source players who can cope with the demands that will be placed upon them. I agree wholeheartedly we need value for every penny spent. I don't think there is value in these signings. Will we receive more than £500k for o halleron? Will we make money on diagouraga? Its a no for me. Will they help bring the league success that will equate too value? I doubt it very much

With our budget second place is a must next year no excuses. That will open the door to a split in european money which again brings us closer to the income they bring in. Our wages as they are should massively be lower than theirs. Its easier to start from a fresh as we have than to cut your cloth as they need to do.

Value does not equal cheap. There is no value in players that are deemed not good enough. If these players come in and get abuse from fans for not performing then we are not going to sell them on at a profit.

The only way value is achieved is if the players are a success on the park and the interest that creates from other clubs enlarges their transfer fee.

To be a success on the park at Rangers you need to be winning. If we have one or two players who are standing out from the rest and we sell them while losing the league fans will go mental. That is the reality. No other reality should be planned for. Mark Warburton needs to build a squad with our resources, what ever those resources are, that hit our goals. Those goals are clear.

    1st year. Automatic promotion

2nd year. 2nd place in premier with euro qualification secured to bring in money that can be spent on better players

    3. a serious title shot.

That's before we even bring in the "tainted 9 in a row" pressure that will build. That's the reality.

Let's wait and see if it's wasting 2m on dross cos the magic hat hasn't let us down yet Trub...

  4. I happened upon the Daily Record sports hotline earlier where Rangers, the only show in town were again the main topic of discussion.

    http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/sports-hotline-warburton-says-wont-7186596?

Having read it I began to wonder who, apart from Rangers fans could possibly be annoyed enough to pick up a telephone and waste time talking about a team he obviously doesn't support and probably more to the point, why the Daily Record would print what they had to say.

Lance Little from Erskine who wrote, “Once again we have total disrespect shown by Rangers to a player, his club and even their fans. Bidding outrageously low is insulting to both player and club and must be embarrassing to all associated to Rangers. If they really want a player, then as most people do when they cannot afford something, they must start to save up their pennies for him.” is no stranger to the hotline. Here he is previously, “Pot and Kettle stuff from Rangers who are looking for player protection as over the years it has been their players other teams needed protection from. Remember Lee “Elbows” McCulloch, Graeme Souness, Terry Hurlock, etc. If you dish it out you must be prepared to take it back and stop bleating. Poor little overpaid players getting bullied.” or earlier, “How refreshing to see a fair decision by the SFA in the Griffiths case. It’s obvious he is just a silly young boy who got caught up in the moment while out with his mates. Give him a break.”

Eddie Eason from Balingry who said, “The Breadman says he won’t be held to ransom. Get in the real world Warbs, your chairman said he was going to spend £30million. From this statement clubs will always want top dollar for their players.” also has previous. “The Scarlet Pimpernel arrives from South Africa and the hot air and sound bites start flowing. The gullible will fall for it again. Rangers owe Mike Ashley £5 million so just pay the man or are they going to try and dodge that like they did with the rest of their creditors?” Interestigly Lance also makes another appearance the same day on the hotline.

What is it with these guys ? Do they not have enough to worry about with their own club ? If you supported an under-achieving team, playing crap football and with a poor manager would you even take a second to consider the minutiae of what's happening at another team ?

For God sake don't listen to Clyde phone - in then boabie. I chucked it years ago bro, the amount of so called gers fans who phone that and moan about us is unbelievable .....

  5. Should be a good test against a bottom half top tier side. Looking forward to seeing how we shape up already. Hopefully get a really big crowd and no live to coverage. Edinburgh Derby is the top tie and then the tims game for the david v Goliath tie, so we shouldn't be on to.

Yes tannoch, hope it's not on telly and gets fans turning out for cup games like the good old days lol..

  6. Not for our monthly shop Bruno, but I do use Lidl to buy my packs of selection of German meats and it also seems to be the only place I can purchase grape and fruit juices to make my home made wine.

Good stuff boabie I only said Aldi for a wee joke but its obviously back fired lol I didn't expect to get a food lesson from calscot when I was trying to make fun of the keech-in-the-bag jungle lol..

  7. I think you might be out of touch with British supermarkets: in Which last year, Aldi was voted second best after Wairtrose with Lidl Joint 3rd. Tesco is way down in 9th out of 10 so would have been more appropriate for them... :)

So who all on gersnet go for their weekly shopping at Aldi and Lidl? Come on bears apart from calscot own up lol...

  8. I thought Holt was pretty invisible today. I only heard his name mentioned on a couple of occasions.

McKay was outstanding as was Wallace. Waghorn was not motm for me as Tavernier did the work to get the penalties. They both played excellent as well though. McKay MOTM

Waldo was my MOTM and holt ran his socks off. I didnt know shiels had come on until he tried to hit the standside linesman with a shot but hardie made it look like a good pass lol...
