  1. That’s my reading Buster. Gerard talks about the big picture and I think the underlying issues are still there. We know where we need to get too but perhaps the early success especially in Europe has created a false expectation when considered with financial reality and the style we need long term.

We have played 12 more games than Aberdeen and 14 more than Killie for example and we are only in December. Saturday will be our 9th game in December. It’s pretty obvious the energy levels are low. I’d take a draw against Celtic right now and recoup.

Take two famous goals at Elland Road. The first a long ball headed on by McCoist for Hateley to half volley in. The second a through ball out wide to Hateley who whipped it in to McCoist who was in his goalscoring position to head it in. The presence of two strikers on the park does create chances and for a Rangers fan to suggest it doesn’t is bizarre to me given our history.

Leeds murdered us for long periods in that game btw although we toyed with them late on. I would agree we need to be flexible but build a particular squad to suit an overall style of play and repeat this through the ranks and that is MA job as I understand it although tactics in individual games are up to SG.

I think 4-4-2 as a club style will be easier for teams like Motherwell to counteract over the long term but when Celtic play at a high level they destroy these clubs. We need better players to play a system that these teams cannot easily neuter but where necessary and for tactical moments or periods in a game we should be able to adjust. I think they are neutralising us at the moment because we don’t have the quality and SG keeps saying the players are not following instructions , which is his message imo to the board and MA that not enough quality is being brought in.

  3. Swap coulibally a loanee for Shinnie and the midfield and midfield to attack transition would be improved with the bonus of shinnie being our own player. Throw Davis in for McRorie and have Jack sitting deep and the midfield would be transformed with a decent 3 in a 4-3-3 line up. Don’t let Morelos go until summer and hope our injuries clear up and we could kick on in the second half of the season. I know everyone is desperate to beat the Tims but I’d be happy to keep within 3 points, make a couple of decent signings and get everyone fit and going again. As they have EL distraction they will drop points. They are no great shakes.

Wonder if SG has a wee Spanish ‘holiday’ planned for them once they’ve had a week off. Hope so!

I’m not sure what games you’ve been watching

We created lots of chances or openings in all of these games. Enough to win them all comfortably if we had better quality in certain areas. If you don’t want to hear it from me then listen to SG who knows more than either of us. We dominated Aberdeen, we pummelled Hibs at Easter Road, we could have been 3-0 up yesterday. Ok the Dundee game we were pysh but still got in a hell of a lot of good areas. Our problem is slow transmission. As I said it’s like waiting for a bus in the pyshing rain watching our attacks develop so I get the slumps and the slickness of movement and midfield quality isn’t there with the current players but the reality is we’ve had opposition goalies playing well and we’ve squandered space. We haven’t spent £10m net and we’d 6 months in. The best thing the fans can do is show patience because no one else is going to work miracles with limited funds compared to Celtic - and playing 4-4-2 and becoming another Aberdeen isn’t the ambition.

You must have been full of some Christmas spirit as Candeias played every single minute of today's game.

    Can’t defend that ?

Maybe I’m tired like the team.

That side of the team used to be a strong point (attacking) and I don’t know what’s happened but has often been a defensive problem. Only conclusion is there’s no one better.

I hope Dave King does not comply with any overtures from PQ that does not entail a complete clean-out of reporters.
I remember at the time when the reporter had his press privileges withdrawn that Chick Young declared that if Rangers did not want one of them, then none of them would attend. Rangers' games. This showed a systemic bias then and it still remains today, which will not be cleared by anything less than a complete clearout.
Let London find out the real problem before we go through with a sham make up and be friends again until the next time.
Really, who needs whom the most?

The real problem was the editorial staff. McLaughlin was given 90 seconds to do a report and even he was unhappy with the output

  7. Agree tannoch - only issue is he took Candeias off and the goal came from down that side. Other than tired legs I didn’t get the substitutions. Again the CH position was key. That cross was good but should have been defended not just at the cross. SG made a mistake taking Candeias off imo from a defensive perspective.

The point being made is the football, which is predictable, lacking in penetration, one dimensional and unable to improvise. Exactly the same as Warburton and to not see the alarming similarities is head in the sand stuff again.

Sorry but we create loads of chances. Hibs, Hamilton, Aberdeen and Dundee should have been stuffed 60-0. We miss quality in the final third to convert and quality building from the back to make quicker passes. The only predictable aspect of our play is the final third and cutting edge. I know we are not going to score because we don’t have players in space in the box. The real head in the sand coop is not understanding our financial legacy. This will take time.

The players are getting a hammering but the management is primarily to blame. Our tactics are awful, team selections awful. We know how to counter attack and we set up that way whether we’re playing Villarreal or Hamilton. It’s madness and I’m sick of it.

I’m honestly struggling to equate the supposed bad tactics with the fact we have created dozens of chances this season we should have scored from.

We created plenty of chances today but not enough clear cut with the tactics we used. It’s down to quality and that needs money. It needs quicker transmission through the phases. Except when we’re in the break our transmission from defence to attack is like waiting for a bus in the pyshing rain. It’s horrible and laboured. Even when we break fast it stalls. It’s quality that is needed not Derek fecking Mcinnes managing the team.

Not with these selections and formation. We don’t have to play 3 defensive midfielders. We have a striker on the bench who would make us so much more dangerous. There was one lesson against St Johnstone and that was that we should have played 4-4-2 from the start because we created nothing until we switched to it and brought on more attacking players. It’s a self inflicted goal drought.

Our problem hasn’t been creating chances and good positions in the last 3 or 4 games or more, it’s finishing and midfield goal contribution. Lafferty isn’t a great goal scorer. Naismith would have been a far better choice btw.

  11. Problem is obvious. Creativity middle to front and lack of real quality in distribution from CH.

As soon as play slows down or balls are not put into space which players can attack the attack breaks down, defences reform and we are deploying tactics against packed defences because we are not quick and accurate enough ie we lack quality.

The real measure on where we are is whether we can build on what are obvious overall improvements. The breakage isn’t individual players who are doing as well as they can or managers who operate on limited budgets given the demands on Rangers are to attack and win every game. The breakage is in finances for the job and we all know the story.

This was never going to be a one window fix with a group of players who were not even physically fit when Gerard took over. The Mexicans are as far as anyone needs to look to see both the cause and solution to the problem. Unless we want to play like Motherwell and deploy 4-4-2 we have to deploy a modern approach. The judgement must be made ongoing after 3 or 4 windows and anyone who thinks we are worse or as bad as we were under Murty, Pedro or Warburton is wrong. None of them would have got through the EL campaign as well as we did all things considered and none of them would have had us challenging for half the season on top of that.

Most folk said we needed 30-50m to catch Celtic. Not sure why that has changed to failure in what is less than 10m net spend since summer.

The team looks out on its legs and has for a month. It needs quality and no matter what formation we use or what famous names manage the club that is the bottom line.

Dont see he has done anything to merit a new deal. Last season was abysmal, and his sporadic outings this season have been up and down.

His recent form in the last few games can now at least be understood, he was in contract negotiations! Seen this all too often, sadly. Ricksen is the prime example of a player who was shit until contract talks started then he looks like a player!

Hopefully he can up his game and earn his no doubt hefty wage rise. I dont think he is any better than McCrorie or Rossiter but will be on a lot more than both.

However it is good to see the club being active in this area in tying down the players SG wants well in advance of their contract expiring. I dont expect any bids for Jack, but at least if one did come in it would need to be decent with 2.5years of a contract to go.

Was he not injured for a lot of last season! He’s the best holding midfielder in Scotland apart from Scott Brown. He will surpass Brown in the next year.

I’ll trust SG when it comes to judging midfielders.

All we can do is keep fighting, tis what it is

When we start scoring which we will and if we keep playing like that we won’t be far away but we need quality goal scoring threat in January window. Whether that’s an advanced midfielder or striker we won’t win the league without it.

Totally agree I was screaming at him for that.

Absolutely. Worral plays like s youngster. No composure and constantly giving the ball away or passing to players who are marked. Maybe he thinks iniesta is in our midfield.
