  6. here is the full article Exclusive by Darryl Broadfoot RANGERS will enter contract negotiations with Kirk Broadfoot and Nacho Novo after next week's Champions League Group G tie against Sevilla at Ibrox. SportTimes understands Walter Smith has expressed his desire to keep the Scotland international defender and the Spanish impact striker at the club to Martin Bain, the Rangers chief executive. Bain will now hold talks with both players' representatives to secure their futures at Ibrox in what is a harsh financial climate for the club. It is the first sign of flexibility from Rangers at a time when they are preparing to announce a poor set of financial results. After taking a scalpel to the squad in the summer and losing an entire team of fringe men, Bain oversaw the signing of only one player - Jerome Rothen, who arrived at Rangers on a year-long loan from PSG. However, he has now been given licence to address the situation regarding a host of players who are free to sign pre-contract agreements elsewhere come January. The guaranteed revenue from the Champions League, estimated at a record £17m, has afforded Bain some much-needed latitude and Broadfoot and Novo will be the first to be offered new terms. Broadfoot has repeatedly stated his desire to remain at Rangers after joining on a Bosman from St Mirren and Smith regards him as a long-term replacement for David Weir when the captain eventually hangs up his boots. The player has suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from a foot operation, injuring an ankle at Murray Park earlier this week, but he is expected to return to full training after next month's international break. His agent will ask for a salary increase to reflect his status as a first-team regular and Scotland international. But Rangers will stress the limitations on their wage bill as the club attempt to trim down costs and, ultimately, attract a new buyer to succeed Sir David Murray. Alistair Johnston will attend his first game as the new chairman tomorrow, when Rangers host Aberdeen, and is expected to be officially unveiled on the eve of the match with Sevilla. Novo is also likely to extend his five-year stay with Rangers despite speculation linking the striker with a move to La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna in the summer. The Spaniard scored Rangers' second goal as a substitute in their 2-1 Co-operative Insurance League Cup win against Queen of the South on Wednesday. And the 30-year-old has accepted his role as a player who is more effective coming off the bench. Kris Boyd is the most high-profile member of the squad in the final year of his contract but there is no decision yet on whether he will be retained. The striker remains a source of frustration to the manager and has already rejected a £3m transfer to Birmingham City, despite being offered in excess of £20,000-per -week, and is reported to have turned down a £50,000-per-week deal to play in Turkey. It is likely Rangers will make him an offer but, with no prospect of featuring prominently in the club's European adventures, he may opt for a new challenge. DaMarcus Beasley will leave in January if offers are forthcoming, while the futures of Weir and Steven Smith will be discussed at a later date. Bain is also relaxed regarding the contractual situation of the manager and his coaching staff. Smith, Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall are contracted until January but their futures should be resolved well before then.
