I imagine he's got way too much on his mind already and these things are much better coming afterwards in any case but it would be nice to think someone somewhere is considering how to get Walter Smith on that knighthood shortlist when the time comes. Or will protocol prevent his elevation on the basis that the Bog Bawface didny get wan?

Imagine thge outcry if WS got a knighthood! The tims have been campaigning for years to get Jock Stein a knighthood and so far it's fallen on deaf ears.

I believe there is no precedent for the bestowing of a posthumous Knightwood.

Jim Traynor was quite illuminating on BBC Radio Scotland last Saturday evening, he offered that Jock Stein had been approached in late '67 about the possibility of a Knighthood in the New Year Honours' List. Stein refused, did not think it would sit with his Mining background and personna. The relevant authorities moved on to ra Sellik Chairman, Bob Kelly and he accepted the award with alacrity.

Of course, the following year, Manchester United won the European Cup and a fellow Scot from a Lanarkshire mineworking background, Matt Busby had no hesitation in accepting the sword on his shoulders. All in all, I suspect Stein was badly advised at the time.

Also a certain boy from Govan was given one automatically(his working-class roots notwithstanding) when he guided a multi-million pound team to the Champions League title. Even if WS were to win the same with virtually no finance he would not be nominated by the Anglocentric powers that be. Despite natural club rivalries it was nothing short of disgraceful that Jock Stein did not receive a knighthood for his achievement in taking a team of Glaswegians to the summit of European football. It will also be held against WS that he had an indifferent time at Everton.

I don't think there's any requirement to have lived an infallible life to receive such an award?

Fergie almost got Man U relegated before turning it all around.

It depends what you call indifferent , the simple fact is he was promised money which never appeared and instead they went on a massive selling spree , in fact Duncan Ferguson was sold without Smith even knowing it had happened .He also kept them up which was an amazing feat considering the players at his disposal .
