The Save Rangers initiative was set up to gauge how many fans are willing to invest in the 140-year-old institution so that it is not controlled by a single majority shareholder in the future. As of yesterday evening, the scheme had raised pledges totalling around £10 million from more than 13,500 fans, with support from several former Rangers players, including Graham Roberts, Terry Hurlock, Craig Paterson and Hugh Burns. It is the idea of the club’s three main supporter organisations – the Rangers Supporters Trust, Rangers Supporters Assembly, and Rangers Supporters Association – with Paul Murray, the Borders-based businessman tipped to spearhead a consortium to buy out Rangers. On Saturday, those behind the campaign will be rallying support outside Ibrox ahead of the club’s home Scottish Premier League game against Hearts. It remains to be seen how many players manager Ally McCoist will have left to choose from for the match.
