RANGERS supporters hoping to play a part in a mooted takeover of their financially stricken club will be organising a fundraising drive at the team’s home game this weekend.

The Save Rangers initiative was set up to gauge how many fans are willing to invest in the 140-year-old institution so that it is not controlled by a single majority shareholder in the future.

As of yesterday evening, the scheme had raised pledges totalling around £10 million from more than 13,500 fans, with support from several former Rangers players, including Graham Roberts, Terry Hurlock, Craig Paterson and Hugh Burns.

It is the idea of the club’s three main supporter organisations – the Rangers Supporters Trust, Rangers Supporters Assembly, and Rangers Supporters Association – with Paul Murray, the Borders-based businessman tipped to spearhead a consortium to buy out Rangers.

On Saturday, those behind the campaign will be rallying support outside Ibrox ahead of the club’s home Scottish Premier League game against Hearts.

It remains to be seen how many players manager Ally McCoist will have left to choose from for the match.

Gordon Stewart, secretary of the Rangers Supporters Trust, said: “We’re delighted that the figure is now over £10m.”

Meanwhile, businessman Brian Kennedy confirmed yesterday he is not interested in being part of a takeover consortium, but admitted that may be the best solution for the club.

Or to put it another way, "We haven't actually raised one penny yet, nor have we any idea what we'd do with that penny if it popped out of fatman's lucky jaffa cake tomorrow."

Dream, delusion or nightmare?

Thank you for your comments, very constructive - not. Still, if I agreed with you then we'd both be wrong.

Yet you just can't stop yourself taking the bait, like a moth to a flame :D

Must be really depressing for you on a day when Craig Whyte comes up with more money than silly SaveRangers

Is that the money in the lawyer's account from the sale of a chunk of the next three season's tickets that you're talking about?
