Meeting With Administrators - Sat.3/3/2012

Recommended Posts

Not that this has anything to do with things at this moment but Michael van Praag KNVB(Dutch FA) chairman and UEFA board member was on dutch TV tonight. The new rules over clubs playing in the black is kicking in in 2013. After that all clubs will have 3 years to get living within their means. After 2016 there will be no more room for cash injections from rich toy boys. Clubs will have to live on what they bring in from football and commercial dealings. If we can sort this out without going into insolvency then it will put us years in front of many other top clubs.

That is true enough and a light on the horizon for those smaller clubs, who are left within the shadows of the Reals, Barcas, ManUs et al. Yet, while I whole-heartedly agree to this policy, I wouldn't be surprised if this bubble bursts once the big guns of Europe and their massive lobby (TV, commercial et al) just say: Shut up. Either you play by our rules or we break off and start a cool European League under no auspices whatsoever bar our own. FIFA and UFEA may threaten to their hearts' content, but the players playing for these clubs and 50k to 200k a week wouldn't mind if they are banned from any other competition.

Maybe the other clubs in the SPL shouldn't be too quick to sanction Rangers, with the new rules coming in to play in the next 3 years. Whilst I believe as a club we should take the higher ground, I certainly will not be forgetting the kicking we've been getting from all sides. It won't and shouldn't be forgotten.

I don't know that the new UEFA rules will make that much of a difference - rich benefactors instead of putting funds directly into their clubs they could presumably start paying the same money for say a hospitality package or a special seat or numerous other pretexts, that would comply with the letter of the legislation.

I hear Rooney is on 200k a week. Others will be too. This would be ridiculous sums being asked for hospitality et al, or shirt deals and the like. Last time I heard ManU debts were in the region of 700m ... and I for one don't think they can sustain their team with TV money and other income alone. That said, ManU or Barca and Real may do this, but about 80% of the rest of the EPL don't. On a sidenote, if a sunstorm shuts down Sky's satellites for a months or two, I could imagine that the EPL bubble will burst big time. But that's another point.

Am i not right in saying most of the TV money comes into the SPL from abroad. I pay roughly £45 for my sports package in Thailand.
