How can Scottish football possibly survive.

Recommended Posts

Taking this seasons League Cup crowds :

There have been 38 matches played, 4 involving Rangers and 34 not involving Rangers.

The 4 matches involving Rangers attracted 122,056 people (average 30,514), the 34 matches not involving Rangers attracted 81,625 (average 2,401).

Or Rangers 4 matches provided 60% of the total attendance in this season's competition so far - which included two home ties for Celtic that failed to reach 15,000.

Of course, none of this will really matter and it's only the club whose name goes on the trophy that matters - until they try and sell the sponsorship for this next season. Will the Scottish Government step in again?

HIBERNIAN chairman Rod Petrie has warned fans that manager Pat Fenlon’s January budget will depend on upcoming gates at Easter Road.

Loan stars Ryan McGivern, Leigh Griffiths and Jorge Claros are currently only contracted until the turn of the year.

And the likes of Gary Deegan, Eoin Doyle, David Wotherspoon and Lewis Stevenson see their deals expire in summer 2013.

Petrie says attendances at Easter Road must improve in the final six home games of 2012 if Fenlon is to receive additional financial backing.

He said: “We’d like to do more to help Pat sustain the improvement in the January transfer window.

“That will depend on our core source of income — receipts from attendances at home games.

“We have tried to match the ambitions of supporters by investing in the team.”

CELTIC’S attendance of 14,399 against St Johnstone was the lowest at Parkhead for 18 years — and that was against the same team.

Tuesday’s crowd for Celts’ 5-0 League Cup win was even lower than the 14,737 who saw the Hoops beat Raith Rovers at Parkhead in the previous round.

The last time Celtic attracted less to Parkhead was in the Lou Macari era, in April 1994.

An attendance of just 10,602 saw Simon Donnelly net against the Saints in a meaningless end-of-season game which finished 1-1.

Celtic moved to Hampden the next season while their old stadium was being refurbished and have never since endured a lower crowd than this week.

Hoops attendances this season have been a cause for concern, with the SPL champions’ average of 45,873 being embarrassingly lower than Third Division Rangers’ average of 47,419.

Celtic’s lowest modern-day gate came in April 1984, when just 4,926 watched them play Dundee.

The Celtic team against Saints in 1994 was: Bonner, Smith, Martin, McNally, Wdowczyk, McGinlay, Nicholas, Galloway, Donnelly, Falconer, Collins.

The Mhanks are actually surviving without us, long may it continue say they.

will they keep their current players in a league which is crumbling around them ? how will they attract new players? they players they got in the summer - sorry, never heard of any of them. Their CL gains may well br offset by their domestic shortcomings. Don't forget they'll have a wagebill around £40m

Wanyama, never heard of him but worth some. They have others and as long as they make the CL which is completely within their control then it will go on for years...I'm getting to the stage where I'll probably never see Rangers anywhere near the CL.
