Scottish Premier League clubs agree to 'explore expansion'

Recommended Posts

Scottish Premier League clubs say they have unanimously agreed to pursue an expansion of the top flight.

Representatives of all 12 clubs met at Hampden to discuss reconstruction, in response to recent proposals from the Scottish Football League.

SPL clubs will meet again on 3 December to debate the matter further.

BBC Scotland revealed at the weekend that the SPL was considering the creation of two divisions of 12 with an extended play-off system.

Those attending the Hampden gathering chose not to divulge any details of the new plan, saying only that it would address the financial disparity between the top tier and the second tier, have a new model of fiscal distribution and reduce the number of meaningless games.

It is understood the two division set-up being explored would see the top league stick with 12 teams but split after two rounds of fixtures in which teams had met home and away.

The top eight clubs would then meet a further twice home and away, while the bottom four clubs would play against the top four of the new lower division of 12, made up of teams invited from the SFL.

These eight clubs would meet twice, home and away, with the bottom four clubs being relegated at the end of the season.

The bottom eight clubs in the lower division would also play-off against one another.

The SFL have been discussing a new way forward that would see a top tier of 16 teams.

Honestly? Anything that involves the word "split" should set the heather on fire with any of the low-key clubs. The SPL was robbing money from the rest of the teams, the upper half of the SPL robbing it from the lower half later on. Why not introduce funny ice-hockey rules, having 30 matchdays and then best-of-five play-offs for the title and relegation?

Sounds like they want to keep control - although they'll water down their votes to pretty much 13 smaller clubs (including Dundee) - unless they have more votes in the top division...

However, they have been shown as incapable of running the top of the Scottish game and only do anything for pure self interest and personal vendettas rather than the good of the game.

The SFL is the only show in town with credibility for integrity but the top 11 will never kowtow to them.

We need a clean out that the SFA and then have them force the leagues to change. They can choose which clubs play in Europe and indeed who has a licence to play in Scotland under the UEFA and FIFA umbrella. So they have a pretty big stick.

Trouble is that the SFA top brass are currently lackeys of Lawwell.

Trouble is that the SFA top brass are currently lackeys of Lawwell.

Need to be shown up for what they are then. The SFL clubs should show some spine and force this upon the SFA. If they side with the SPL, propose a split from them, the SFA that is. Hell may break lose, but look what we have in boxing. The SFA may threaten, UEFA or FIFA may threaten, but who would concern that? As if the players from Partick, East Fife or Stranraer would suffer sleepless nights about their upcoming European games. It would sure set the heather on fire ...

Until there is one organisation running Scottish football and along with every team actually putting football first nothing will improve, and I can't see that happening any time soon :(

I agree entirely with you.

Doncaster was on Radio Scotland earlier and he explained that a league of 16 is not acceptable to SPL clubs because it will have to many "meaningless" games. It's this type of thinking that is destroying Scottish football, no professional football match is meaningless.

hes ignoring the opportunity that gives to develop young players.

hes also ignoring the fact it would give a good non oldfirm club the chance to get close to rangers and celtc just by beating the diddys.

then their is the fact its what fans want and the benefits to the national team with more youngsters and more players exposed to top level football.
