Objectionable fan banner against Ashley

Recommended Posts

Honestly, I'd bet that Rangers FC have a ban on banners using disappropriate, foul and abusive language, not least untowards staff members, directors et al. No matter what we think about the matter. Hence my ire at the G4S folk.

To me that is not much different than e.g. a house party where someone has a friend or is married to a member of the police and "your" friends happen by wearing ACAB shirts.

Personally speaking... I don't have a problem with our fans expressing strong opinions, including through the use of colourful language because as you rightly point out, it is football and this is Glasgow after all....

Having said that, I don't really think it's fair to the club or other fans to do it in this way with that banner.

It's not fair to the club when the new owners are trying to build a working relationship with the guy to get his money, the advantages of dealing with his companies and possibly even get one or two good player loan deals from Tyneside thrown into the equation.

It's not fair to other fans who don't share the same view ("fuck off"), especially other fans who were sitting or standing behind or near the banner who don't share that view. I wasn't there and I wouldn't like to speak out for those who were, but there's bound to be a few who weren't (and still aren't) particularly happy about it.

You might recall a few months ago we had a discussion on here after another banner was displayed, quite possibly by the same group.

It singled out a politician for fairly robust abuse. At the time the majority on here didn't have much problem with it, indeed a fair number were defending those who displayed it and their right to display it. It got quite heated on here, indeed at least one poster left the board shortly after it.

The point I made at the time was that different banners will upset different people. Because a number on here agreed with the basic sentiment of the anti-Salmond banner they happily defended it. Because some disagree with this sentiment it's being criticised. Who is the arbiter of taste here, who decides what can and can't be displayed?

The way I see it we either need to ban them all or none at all.

As for the banner it is very misguided, Ashely, however objectionable he comes across isn't the villain here, he's buying, the subject of their ire should be whoever is selling.

Sorry but that was just a rude and childish way to go about it, and reflects badly on the club and fans. It's one thing swearing during the frustrating process of watching a match, putting it in big letters like that is another.

As for it being typical Glasgow, well again probably doesn't reflect so well on our city. I'm not trying to get on a high horse, like most i'll swear sometimes if I feel compelled to do so, but I don't treat it like a second language either.

I agree with everything you've said. So do we ban all banners or just the ones we don't like?

Because the charge would be Religious hate...

but thats just an excuse. i dont dislike the pope because he is simply a catholic, i dont wish him to fuck off simply because he is a catholic. why this hatred for ashley from these idiots? is it because he is jewish? a cockney? an englishman? all those are discriminatory too.

I'd ban all banners where swearing is involved certainly.

Why? Not everyone is as sensitive about swearing as you are, indeed the English language is the richer for swearing, it's intrinsic to our ability to communicate and imply force of feeling. It doesn't offend or upset me in the slightest.
