Ally McCoist: Boos from fans are driving my Rangers players on to title glory

THE Light Blues gaffer insists taunts from rival fans will only inspire his stars to silence them by scoring more goals.

ALLY McCOIST loved being taunted by rival fans when he played for Rangers – because it motivated him even more to silence them with goals.

Now, as he attempts to lead the club back to Scotland’s top flight, the Ibrox boss is delighted that his players are being driven to succeed all the more by jeers from the sidelines.

McCoist watched his League One runaway leaders overcome the hostile atmosphere at East End Park on Monday to record an impressive 4-0 win over Jim Jefferies’s Dunfermline.

Home fans taunted the leaders with chants of “You’re Not Rangers Any More” in Fife and McCoist has warned his squad the abuse will only increase on the Ibrox giants’ journey back to the top.

He said: “The atmosphere inside East End Park was great. We all enjoyed it and it was like a throwback to an older age of football. It’s been a while since Rangers have played in that kind of atmosphere.

“I fashioned a whole career based on siege mentality. I used to be disappointed if I wasn’t getting barracked by the opposition fans. Players have to use things like that as a motivational tool. A siege mentality can help you because you either sink or swim.

“When you are getting a reception like that, it’s great because it shows you they care. You just have to use that energy to spur you on.

“Dunfermline’s boys looked as though they enjoyed it as well because they were all really up for the game.

“If that’s the case, that’s great because that’s the kind of atmosphere you want to play your football in.

“It is a bit of a surprise for players like Bilel Mohsni but he absolutely loved it. He was even clapping the Dunfermline supporters at the end as he’s a larger-than-life character.

“Hopefully the players use the energy of playing in front of hostile supporters to push them on and then we can continue our ascent up the leagues.”

Off the field, McCoist is due to meet Rangers chief executive Graham Wallace in the coming days to discuss potential cuts across the board in a bid to stave off another financial disaster.

He remains in the dark as to whether he will be able to bring in any new faces this month but Monday’s result on the field was the perfect riposte to the lacklustre display that saw Rangers toss away two points in the 1-1 Boxing Day draw with Stranraer at Ibrox.

McCoist remains focused solely on wrapping up the title as soon as possible and said: “It’s self-pride and self-motivation they have to find within themselves.

“It’s just something Rangers players have been faced with for 140 years, you have to get yourself motivated for every game.

“There have been periods when our club has been way ahead in league competitions but they keep going. The players owe it to the Rangers fans. You saw them at East End Park and I thought they were magnificent.

“The fans were unhappy on Boxing Day and rightly so. That in itself must be a motivation for all the players. What we’ve got to do is win the league and we have to make continued progress.”
