...for FREE in move set to save skint club £5m a year.

A GROUP of joiners, brickies, plasterers, welders and painters are set to descend on Ibrox and the club's Murray park training ground to carry out essential repair jobs.

DESPERATE Rangers fans have signed up to repair their crumbling stadium - for free.

A handful of handy supporters have offered their services to the skint club after an appeal on social media - in a move they hope will save the club £5m a year.

Now a team of around 50 painters, joiners, brickies, plasterers, welders and painters could be set to descend on the Govan stadium and their Murray Park training ground.

The initiative, instigated by Rangers supporter Allan Woods, comes a week after Gers powerbroker Dave King said the venues are likely to require millions of pounds in repairs.

Previous estimates have speculated that the cost of general repairs could total £10million.

Woods’ online advert appealed or fans “willing to give up a few hours or days of their time to help with essential work and Ibrox Stadium and Murray Park.

“Tradesmen in all trades are especially required but there is also plenty of work for the unskilled

“This is out chance to show Rangers fans re simply the best. We can save the club £5m a year by mucking in.”

Some fans have questioned the health and safety implications of such a move.

Director John Gilligan said: “The club very much appreciates this kind gesture by the fans.

“We are assessing the overall condition of the stadium to prioritise the essential works required.

“We will make contact with the supporters in the coming weeks should we require their assistance.”

Brilliant stuff.

As long as the logistical and safety issues are examined then it seems like a very healthy community initiative.

Elsewhere, it would be regarded as a ingenious and brilliant gesture by the support, in Scotland (and the DR, for that matter), we get "desperate" and "skint club" instead.

I understand that Gilligan has been given responsibility of the refurbishment of Ibrox.

I'm not sure that he has much property management experience but is certainly ideal for promoting a venture such as this and I'm sure he will work well with the likes of Allan Woods.

They also must have searched hard and long for the appropriate photo!

I hope Health and Safety will be put at a high level as the last thing we need is an industrial accident. The health and Safety board and the media will be down on us like a ton of bricks. Unfortunately it is not just as simple as sticking a paint brush in someone's hand.

Most tradesmen, and a lot of labourers, these days are self employed with their own public liability insurance.
