We Will Remember The Somme

Recommended Posts

At 7am on the 1st of July 1916, The Battle of The Somme commenced.

Next year, it will be 100 years.

As long as earth revolves upon its axis turning,

And day sleeps in the dark and wakens with the dawn,

As long as sun goes down and rises in the morning,

We will remember the Somme.

Lest We Forget

We must never forget. Never forget the utter waste of milions of the most productive of humans lives; never forget the devastation of the lives of those who were left; never forget what happens when an unelected elite plays pawns with the lives of young men; never forget the bombast, the jingoism and the false patriotism of those who stood on the sidelines encouraging others to die for their own machismo and national inferiority complexes. Never forget the manipulation and propaganda which lead millions to end their lives early so that a few could continue to enjoy the high life.

When you "remember the Somme"; ask yourselves what it is you are remembering.

I can't but think of the simple way of life we live today, which we all take for granted. Those guys had cold shaves each morning with the knowledge it might be their last.

It was for most.

We wish to remember the sacrifice these men made. Simple and non-complicated.

What you are on about is an insult to their memory.

I think this post says a lot about the author.

Spent the day in Belfast on Wednesday . Lest we forget.

Rpb, that post of yours sums you up in a single post. Well done on winning the worst post of the week/year award.

Hope you never need to rely on brave young men anyway

I'm glad we allow free speech on here but there's a time and a place for making a political point.

Yes questions must always be asked about how and why our people are expected to make the ultimate sacrifice far too often but a thread of remembrance is not the place to make that point.

None of us want to see the often futile wars that have seen so many of our kin killed but life just isn't as simple as that. As such, I and we should always salute the bravery and selflessness of those who have served (and continue to do so) in all our names. That is the point of remembrance and I will not see that simple gesture sullied by people who know better.

You must ask why someone, particularly in a Rangers site, would even try to denigrate the sacrirfice and memory of what our "sons" gave.

War is awful, no sensible person honours or even tries to dignify the horrors of it, but to try and score political points, or insult the memory of those who innocently gave their tomorrow for our today is unacceptable.

Well said Barca72 and Frankie
