Peter Campbell Memorial

Recommended Posts

From the Gallant Pioneers/Founders Trail guys.

Over the last couple of years the Rangers Graves Restoration Project has carried out work on the final resting places of not only those who formed our Club but many others from our early years.

This work will continue early in the new year.

One individual has posed us a problem of sorts and that is our Founder Peter Campbell.

Following in family tradition Peter ,who had been employed at the Barclay Curle Yard on the Clyde , left for a life at sea and joined a ship the St. Columba.

On the 28th January 1883 the vessel left Penarth Port in South Wales with a cargo of coal destined for Bombay in India.

Tragically, it ran into a storm in the Bay of Biscay and went down with all hands lost, including that of our 25 year old Founder Peter Campbell.

The youngest of our Pioneers was taken from us.

A few weeks ago we contacted Penarth Council about the possibility of having a memorial plaque placed at Penarth in memory of Peter Campbell highlighting his contribution in forming Rangers Football Club and his eventual fate.

The Council were touched by his story and have since involved Penarth Civic Society .

On Monday 14th December we were delighted to receive notification from their secretary that the proposal for the plaque had been agreed on.

I’ve arranged to travel to Penarth next month to meet with the Civic Society and agree on a suitable location, The Penarth Pier Pavilion has been mentioned as a probability.

The Cardiff RSC have been informed and will be involved in the project.

We will of course post regular updates on all progress

Peter Campbell.

A Memorial to our Founder Peter Campbell.

From The Gallant Pioneers 1872 by Gary Ralston.

The message to the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen in Cardiff , dated at 5.22pm, was blunt and to the point:

'Reliable information received here direct from Marennes stated some wreckage from steamer St Columba washed ashore near Marennes, Bay of Biscay . She left Penarth Dock, January 28, for Bombay'

Tears were shed up and down the country for loved ones lost, particularly at Glasgow and Garelochhead as relatives and friends of Peter Campbell , one of the founders of Rangers , came to terms with his death.

He was only 25 years old.

The Peter Campbell Memorial is now on the Club website.
