Carlos Pena: Why He Looks Ready for a Transfer in 2014

Mexico lacked a complete footballer for years—a player who had the ability of organizing the midfield, helping the defense and finishing plays. The search ended when Carlos Pena debuted with El Tri in 2013. His stay in the country may be short, though.

Pena plays for Mexican club Leon. The team was relegated in 2002 and made it back to the Liga MX 10 years later; Pena was a key element in the two-legged playoff as he scored once and helped with structure and organization in the center of the pitch.

He is one of the most valuable players in his position, and after this year’s World Cup, it would be no surprise if he left for Europe.

Pena is one of the best players when the team needs to recover possession. He is physically fit and strong, which comes in handy when he needs to charge the rival and challenge for the ball.

This sets him as a very valuable asset for the defense. Once he steals the ball, he is capable of keeping it while his side reorganizes in the attacking line. His leadership and structure give confidence to the team.

"Gullit" can command the midfield in style. He distributes the ball with such accuracy that during the World Cup playoff against New Zealand, he had three assists.

With Leon, he is also a beast. Last year during the Clausura and Apertura tournaments, Pena scored six times and had four assists. And in the current season, he is making a huge impact too: He has three goals to his count in five matches.

He is one of the key playmakers of his club and the national team. His speed gives him the possibility to run through the left flank until he reaches the box, from where he usually passes the ball to his teammates.

Gullit also runs from the center of the pitch, leaving behind the defenders and sending through passes to the forwards, giving them scoring options.

Finishing plays is another of his resources. He is very unbalancing and has good dribbling skills, which help him get in front of the goalkeeper and shoot from close-range, although he can also take his chances from outside the box.

A highly disciplined team player, Pena could very well fit in the Premier League. He could polish his skills if he goes to a club of the likes of Aston Villa, Fulham, Swansea or Stoke City; all of them lack a player like him.

Italian football could be another possibility for the Mexican. He has great technique and knows how to help his teammates shine, mainly by linking the midfield with the attacking zone.

So don't be surprised if Pena starts wearing a new jersey as soon as the next season starts.

Rangers can seal £1million deal for Fabio Cardoso as Vitoria Setubal are powerless to stop it says boss Jose Couceiro

The Portuguese boss is resigned to losing his talented centre-back to the Light Blues if Ibrox chiefs choose to push through a bid.

Vitoria Setubal boss Jose Couceiro has admitted he is powerless to prevent Rangers sealing a £1million deal for Fabio Cardoso.

The Portuguese boss is resigned to losing his talented centre-back to the Light Blues if Ibrox chiefs choose to push through a bid.

Pedro Caixinha has targeted Cardoso for his summer rebuild and Couceiro knows a seven-figure sum along with the lure of a big club will make it impossible for him to keep his stopper.

He said: “I want to keep Fabio. But my team is not as big and strong as Rangers. We are a middle team in Portugal and we don’t have power.

“If Rangers want a player of Vitoria, we do not have the power to prevent it or to keep this guy.“Obviously, he is one of my best players and I want him to stay. To make a good team, you need good players always but this is life. I understand.“If Fabio is wanted by Rangers, of course, it is good for him.”

Cardoso has been at Setubal for just one season after moving from the second team at Benfica.

Couceiro revealed Caixinha knows the 23-year-old well but insisted he’s not had any contact with his old friend over the switch.

He said: “I know Pedro. He is a good guy and coach. He didn’t call me. He didn’t need to. He knows the player very well.”

Caixinha has several transfer targets with Aberdeen’s Ryan Jack and Cardoso’s fellow countryman Bruno Alves on the list as he rings the changes in a squad that lost its way under former boss Mark Warburton.

Talks with another target Mexican Carlos Pena are ongoing but the signing of the midfielder is not imminent – not least as he does not qualify for a UK work permit.

He has 19 caps for his country but has played only two of their games in the last two years, against Chile and Paraguay last May and June.

Mexico are ranked in the top 20 of the FIFA rankings and to be considered for a work permit to play in the Premiership, players must have featured in 45 per cent of their nation’s matches in the last 24 months.

Rangers must now apply for a governing body endorsement from the SFA before a work permit request will be considered by the Home Office.

... always expected this to happen and given who holds the reigns up there, this may become "Interesting".

On another note, yesterday we had some Russian chap lamenting about the 1972 CWC Final and us willing to participate in a replay in Rome - because we needed the money (!!!), given the prospect of facing two years out of Europe. Today we have that poor soul of the Setubal coach lamenting that big bad Rangers coming in and pricing his talent away from him. On another day, you might think this is a concerted project in throwing some dirt at us ...

If it was the other side of the city - it would just get pushed through. No questions asked. As you say db be interesting to see if this comes off for us and how it develops

Carlos Pena’s Rangers move should be tied up in 'next few days' claims agent

Salvador Necochea says Mexico star’s Ibrox deal should be sealed soon.

Carlos Pena’s agent has revealed he is hoping to seal the Mexican international midfielder's move to Rangers in the next few days.

And he's insisted the controversial Leon star is desperate to move to Scotland and play a part in the Pedro Caixinha revolution.

Pena, known as Gullit in his Mexican homeland, is a target for the Ibrox side with the Portuguese boss desperate to rebuild his underachieving side.

But Salvador Necochea has also warned Rangers that a Mexican club have also shown interest in the 27-year-old.

He said: "Rangers want him because Pedro Caixinha knows him extremely well and believes his game is perfectly suited to what he needs at Rangers."The talks are continuing with Rangers. At the moment, we don't know whether Carlos' move will be a transfer or a loan. But we are hoping for this to be concluded in a few days.

"Carlos has a couple of options, the strongest of which are Rangers. But it is not 100 per cent yet.

"There is also one club in Mexico who are interested."He is excited about the transfer to Rangers, he wants to explore new horizons. Playing in Europe for a club who are the most important in their country appeals to him."Carlos is hoping this will come to a good conclusion for him."

And Necochea is confident Pena would qualify for a work permit, despite his recent lack of international appearances.

He said: "It is true that is an issue that needs to be resolved."But we would be confident that Rangers would deal with that side of things once we complete our negotiations with them."

Will be interesting to see what happens here as I seem to remember PC saying that he won't tolerate players, or agents, saying other clubs are interested.... I think his words were pretty much, if they say all of a sudden another club is interested then Rangers will no longer be...
