The Rangers Tax Case decided - who were the real villains?

Recommended Posts

It is hilarious to read some of the forums in the media. The moon howlers are out in force.

They're adamant honours must be removed. These people have been conned by the likes of liewell but haven't the intellect to realise.

Just sit back & watch. Should be great entertainment

In a way it's pretty simple - it was an avoidance scheme which has been closed down and the players are liable for the bill. As someone who has been self employed for nearly 20 years, you read about these schemes all the time and I remember when EBTs were being discussed as an option. At the time, a quick google made it clear that it wasn't worth the risk - it fell under the umbrella of "too good to be true" and my accountant agreed. So it was always high risk and I'm kind of surprised someone like Murray went along with it.

I also don't get the argument that we couldn't have afforded the players without using this scheme. Murray would have found a way - possibly another tax avoidance loophole - but that's another very flimsy argument to try and stir emotions and a sense of injustice.

It is nice to see that we're being blamed again for the downfall of Scottish football due to everyone trying to spend lots to keep up with us. Again, it's all about Rangers and nobody taking responsibility for their own actions.

The real villains?

Since the inception of the BTC, there was a school of thought which asserted that EBTs were an established method of tax avoidance,

and that the case against Murray Group (incl Rangers) was due to its maladministration of its schemes.

It appears now, unless I am misreading the situation, that the EBT strategy employed by Murray, under advisement, was completely flawed in principle, irrespective

of how it was put into practice.

If that is correct, the real villains were, presumably, the architects of an unsound, defective mechanism to avoid Income Tax.

Murray, of course, would have to be criticised for seizing upon it with such gusto, so he too would be among the black hats.

Quite what the implications are is beyond me.

"Murray, of course, would have to be criticised for upon it with such gusto, " coming (sic) as it did from a porn peddler.

"Like a dug oan a beetroot", as they say in the coarser parts of the realm.

The very first person I saw use the term cheating and suggest titles should be stripped was Lennon then it grew apace from there. I don't think he was even being entirely serious at the time he just wanted to take a swipe so opened the orifice and let the shit flow. Then those even dumber than he is took up the cry.

And even Lennon saw the stupidity of putting us at the bottom of the pile and though he wasn't exactly vociferously speaking against it he did hint that it wasn't a good idea.

Meanwhile "leading quality paper from the country" (snigger away in the back, middle and front rows, in a blinding piece of top notch 'journalism" has a poll on "Should Rangers be stripped of titles". Shameless. Ut is even headed "their EBT titles". Totally shameless.

So glad I moved away, sad to say, from the land of my birth.
