Dearer booze

Recommended Posts

I think that, at first, it will affect cheap booze. Those of us who drink quality brews, distillations, etc will find little impact.

Consumers of strong ciders will see a big difference, as will those who sup the close wine.

I'm not so sure about that.

If the price of the cheapest blended whiskey goes up then I expect that the same would happen for decent blends and middle of the road malts.

I tend to side with the health professionals on this. It problably will not make any difference to those already with a drink problem but will stop youngsters developing a problem.

Heard all the same doom and gloom when the smoking ban came in and it’s been a great succcess.

Quite different legislation though.

What do you think would have happened if minimum pricing of tobacco had been introduced instead of the smoking ban?

Won’t the decent blends and middle of the road malts already be above the minimum price threshold ? Just asking as I genuinely don’t know

Probably, yes.

I think that other products will believe that it is possible to charge a higher price though.

Then again, I might be wrong. It could just be that the cheapest products disappear from the market in Scotland.
