History[edit]

The Fund was launched on 14 March 2012 by Rangers legends Walter Smith and Sandy Jardine during the clubs administration in order to raise funds to help protect the Club’s future.[3][4] The Fund was endorsed by three of the largest Rangers fans groups, namely the Rangers Supporters' Trust, the Rangers Supporters Assembly and the Rangers Supporters Association.[2] In September 2014, the Fund decided to withhold any payments to the club after requesting and failing to receive adequate assurances from the then Rangers board regarding its future plans[5] It had been reported that the Fund was ready to disband and disburse funds to the club.[6] When the Rangers board agreed to grant Mike Ashley's Sport Direct company security over Murray Park and Ibrox Stadium in January 2015,[7] the Fund pledged £500,000 of its funding to support the Rangers Supporters' Trust's legal battle seeking to prevent the board from doing so.[8]

In February 2016, the Fund revealed plans to provide £450,000 to build a 264-seater stand at Murray Park.

It kinda looks like the fans were looking for something to do to help the club and along came Walter, Ally and Sandy Jardine along with the supporter groups to formalize the movement.

Here's an article from March 2012 ...

Smith returns to crisis club Rangers... to help launch fans' fundraising scheme

Former boss Walter Smith showed his support at Ibrox as the SPl crisis club launched a 'Rangers Fans Fighting Fund' to raise vital funds towards the club's running costs.

Manager Ally McCoist and his predecessor Smith were joined by former defender Sandy Jardine in endorsing the move to urge supporters to make donations to help the club during administration.

Smith, Jardine, supporters liaison manager Jim Hannah and Rangers Supporters Assembly president Andy Kerr will control the bank account and pass on donations to administrators Duff and Phelps as and when the money is required.

Rangers' two home games since they entered administration on February 14, against Kilmarnock and Hearts, were sold out and manager McCoist hopes the latest initiative is well received.

McCoist said on the club's official website: 'I encourage all fans to back the Rangers Fans Fighting Fund and help the club in any way they can, as they have done in recent weeks.

'Our fans have been fantastic. They are showing their true colours and have not walked away during these times of need.

'On behalf of everyone at the club I would like to thank our supporters for all their efforts and I ask them to keep backing us and keep filling Ibrox for matches as their support will make a difference.'

Smith, who led Rangers to three successive Clydesdale Bank Premier League titles before stepping aside for McCoist last summer, added: 'It has been an extremely difficult time for everyone associated with Rangers but the supporters have shown unbelievable commitment to our club throughout the administration process and deserve great credit.

'I encourage all fans to make a donation and back this campaign as their support will help safeguard the club's future.'
