Greg Docherty Signs

Club Statement – Greg Docherty

After several weeks of speculation and negotiations, we accepted an offer from Rangers Football Club which met our expectations.

Greg has worked his way through our Academy ranks since joining at eight years of age.

He and his coaches have worked hard to make him the outstanding footballer he now is.

Greg’s attitude and character is first class and he has all the attributes needed to compete on a greater stage than Scotland and become a regular Internationalist.

We wish him good fortune and look forward to seeing him visit us regularly as so many do who have moved on from our Academy

Hamilton’s Martin Canning hails Greg Docherty and Mikey Devlin after Rangers and Aberdeen moves – and admits he needs to control hype around Accies kid Lewis Ferguson

Canning reckons Docherty and Devlin will go to the very top and backed them to become Scotland favourites.

MARTIN CANNING claims Hamilton have sold two Scotland stars of the future in Greg Docherty and Mikey Devlin.

Midfielder Doc sealed a £680,000 move to Rangers, while Accies skipper Devlin has moved on to Aberdeen.

Gaffer Canning reckons the duo will go to the very top and backed them to become Tartan Army favourites.

He said: “I think both Michael and Greg will play for Scotland one day. There’s no reason why they couldn’t

“Michael is 23 and Greg is 21 so they have time on their side.

“I’m happy for Greg because it’s a massive opportunity for him. He’s done great for us.

“As for Michael, towards the end of last season before he got injured he was probably the top centre back in the league.

“He’s a player who could cost up to £700k when fully fit and Aberdeen are getting him for much less.

“I think Michael can go even further again as well because he’s got everything you need in a defender.

“He’s aggressive, he attacks the ball really well, he’s got use of the ball, he’s quick and he’s mobile which is unusual for centre backs. He has everything he needs to become a top centre
back and this is an opportunity for him to progress even further.”

Midfielder Lewis Ferguson, son of former Rangers star Derek, is the next Accies kid tipped for the top — and Canning admits he needs to control the hype.

He said: “It’s always going to happen to Fergie.

“He’ll get the comparisons to his uncle Barry and his dad and talk about him going to Rangers.

“Now that Greg has gone there it will probably only intensify that talk.

“But for Lewis, he’s just got to keep himself fully focused.

“I’ve spoken to him about that and we’ll have a wee chat again to remind him to forget that distraction and put himself first.

“But he’s such a good down-to-earth kid, he’s the first one in here in the morning and he’s in there cleaning and sweeping up.”

Hamilton yesterday confirmed they have freed midfielder Grant Gillespie.
