Tommy Docherty Dead

Recommended Posts

Respect to the Doc. Modernised an ageing Chelsea team that had lost Jimmy Greaves with youngsters such as Terry Venables, Charlie Cooke, George Graham , John Hollins and Peter Bonetti.

Funnily enough, he was also responsible for changing the kit from an eton blue shirt, white shorts and black socks (no red tops though) to blue, blue with stripe and white socks - I wonder why he didn't like the former!!!!!

According to a quick Google search:

"Tommy Docherty changed the kit again, switching to blue shorts and white socks, believing it made the club's colours more modern and distinctive, since no other major side used that combination.".

Doesnt quite make it into the top 3 drastic kit changes...

1. Brazil dropping their all white strip after the shame of losing the 1950 WC "final". They then went onto adopt their famous yellow shirts from 1954 after a newspaper competition.

2. Aberdeen going from yellow and black stripes to all red and white in 1940.

3.Leeds Utd changing from blue and yellow combinations to all white in 1960.

Anyhoo...RIP Doc.

Cardiff City - blue to red controversially in 2012 but back to blue a couple of years later.

Will always be remembered for his "Carthorse v the thoroughbred" quote IMO.

'Knees up mother Brown' might be your answer if you ask a Liverpool fan.

He seemed like a decent, down to Earth bloke in my limited knowledge of him.
