Over my lifetime I repeatedly hear, or read, about the special relationship between the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

This mainly comes from the press but also from people I know.

Does it exist?

Don't think it ever existed outside of the establishment and media as you say. How has the US treated Germany or France any differently from the UK since the end of WW2?

They are in no hurry to sign a trade deal, threatened us over Brexit and then again with Blair's GFA, they used this "special relationship" to obtain support for action/regime change in Afganistan, Iraq and Libya and then there is the Harry Dunn situation. I think there is friendly relations and whenever i have been there I have been met with warmth and friendship by the ordinary people, but i can say that for Germany and Scandinavia too, so not sure how special it really is.

I believe it does exist but more so in practical intergovernmental terms rather than the heart-on-the-sleeve sentimentality of tabloid headlines. Above all I believe a strong special relationship doesn't mean we have to like everything about each other. It's not a beauty contest, it's what happens in the shadows that really counts.

It seems to be more of an obligation, driven by geopolitics, than a desired relationship.

The problems in US society do seem to transfer across the Atlantic more than they did in the past (due to globalism and social media), which isn't a good thing.

concur, I would imagine that in the murky business of intelligence the special relationship is alive and well

according to Le Carre the MI6 code for USA was Cousins and Israel was Friends IIRC

I was going to say, yes, but only because our interests, generally, are aligned; but that's not a 'special relationship', is it?

I’d say that’s exactly what a special relationship is.

The special relationship, as described to me, implies something more than aligned interests.

It implies that either country may help the other even when our interests are not entirely aligned.
