England vs New Zealand 3rd Test | ENG win by 7 wkts to win series 3-0

Recommended Posts

During lunch on day 1, Sky Sports are replaying Leach's famous 1* against Australia in the Ashes at Headingley 2019.

(I think Stokes was there, too... ?)

Seriously, though - what a day that was!

The Blundell-Mitchell partnership, again, proving to be stubborn.

Those two have made sure the Tests thus far have been competitive and entertaining.

They deserve a different outcome this time although I doubt they will get it.

I think they might.

That would require more

of their teammates to step up and produce.

Boult is probably the only other Kiwi to do well in this series.

Not enough for winning matches.

The tailenders again have posed a problem for ENG.

Why would that be?

Indiscipline from the bowlers? Batsmen being aggressive?

Can be both of those and other factors… eg pitch and weather conditions, whether the ball is seaming/swinging.  But mostly it’s because you get very few tail end bunnies these days. Almost everyone can play a shot or two, and when they catch a bit of luck, anything can happen.

I think also that England lack someone with a little bit of extra pace and bounce, combined with aggression, to really steam through tail ends.

One of the reasons NZ have held sway in world rankings has been their long batting line up. These are all batsmen down to Bracewell and only the last three can be considered tai lenders although as @Stewarty rightly says even guys like Tim Southee can hit shots and has a high test score of 77 and a test average of 16.

NZ are now batting into a fifth session and appear to have given themselves at least the possibility of a result. England can't leave themselves depending on a final day wicket so really need to assert their first innings.
