I think that the end of empire had more to do with mad jingos, like Churchill, than socialism though. Is it a coincidence that many are still gripped by the non-existent threat of socialism while lamenting an inability to deal with real problems that we face today? We also live in a country that worships Churchill. His influence coincides with two events that deleted the British empire. We have statues of him and you often hear about how we 'won' two world wars.
