Off course they are, but the current system seems to focus on the genuinely sick rather than those playing the system.

Sometimes it can be difficult to identify those playing the system. Take long covid for instance. The media have fully accepted this as fact whereas feeling tired, cold like symptoMs, aches etc that we all get from time to time are all being attributed to this and diagnosed for long term sick absence. Does it exist?

ONS:  An estimated 2.0 million people living in private households in the UK (3.1% of the population) were experiencing self-reported long COVID (symptoms continuing for more than four weeks after the first confirmed or suspected coronavirus (COVID-19) infection that were not explained by something else) as of 2 January 2023

Mental health seems to be the new expression for "feelings". It seem that any time someone isn't ecstatically happy they have mental health issues, which is an immaturity issue.

It doesn't seem to be connected to mental illness, which of course is a serious matter.

This is what happens when society becomes so feminised - emotions trump rationale.  Which is not good.

If a person is feeling down, will moping around the house, wallowing in self pity, really do them any good?

Over-parenting has denied people the opportunity to develop the resilience that would allow them to cope with disappointment. So many remain vulnerable and immature their whole lives.

Given that I have first hand experience of people with genuine mental illness, you are way off the mark.

Mental illness is real and affects many people in many ways and can be devastating to those who have it as well as their families.

Thankfully, the "stigmas" surrounding mental illness, especially in men are being knocked down but given some of the comments in this thread, clearly still some way to go.

Undoubtedly true. Genuine mental illness has been around forever but it seems that some people see “mental health”as a useful label when at worst they have non-clinical depression. It’s the new mysterious “back injury” keeping folk off work long term.

Real mental illness is so seriously bad for the patient and his family it shouldn’t be diminished in any way.

But non-clinical depression can still lead to suicidal thoughts that some may act on.

Depression and anxiety are horrendous illnesses and if not identified and treated, can be devastating to those suffering and those living with the suffering.

Mental illness is an industry now.

Like a lot of other things we see, genuine problems are promoted, exaggerated and encouraged by those keen to benefit financially.  They're doing a bloody good job of it too.

Things were better the way they were before.
