Sab Samuel, who runs Drag Queen Story Hour UK, helped to fundraise for the funeral of his friend, Darren Moore, a drag queen found dead in an alleyway in January. Samuel, who is also a drag queen and performs under the name Aida H Dee, wrote online “Taken unjustly! I’d like to help give my friend the send off he deserves,” and provided a GoFundMe link. Moore, previously known as Darren Sewell, was convicted as a teenager of four charges of raping a boy under the age of 16 in South Wales. He spent three years in a young offender institution and was banned from having contact with children. In 2011, he was caught working with youngsters as a gymnastics and dance tutor and convicted of breaching the lifetime order. He was sentenced to a three-year sex offender’s treatment programme, a 24-month supervision order, 300 hours of community service, and a six-month curfew with an electronic tag. Moore, who performed under the alias Crystal Couture, reinvented himself as a drag queen and in 2018 was hired by British Airways to represent the airline on its float at a Pride festival in Brighton. The company was unaware of his previous offending. He was found dead in Cardiff and a man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. This week Samuel visited a school as his drag alter ego. He spoke to Year 7 pupils at Lewis School, in Pengam, Wales, about homosexuality. Caerphilly county borough council said that “no concerns have been raised by the school community”. Samuel started Drag Queen Story Hour UK in 2017 and hosted more than 280 events last year. The events are regularly besieged by protesters holding signs with slogans such as “stop grooming kids”. One person tried to perform a citizen’s arrest on him last summer. Last month a school on the Isle of Man suspended its sex education curriculum after a drag queen guest was said to have told pupils there were 73 genders and made a child who argued that there were “only two” leave the classroom. The island’s education department said the terms of reference for its investigation into sex education would remain private until its report was published. The corporation’s executive complaints unit (ECU) launched an investigation after concerns were raised about how Bryson was described in coverage of his conviction for raping two women. Two viewers complained about a reference to Bryson on an edition of Reporting Scotland on January 24. Isla Bryson carried out the attacks when she identified as a man called Adam Graham A presenter said: “A woman has been found guilty of raping two women prior to changing her gender. 31-year-old Isla Bryson carried out the attacks in Clydebank and Glasgow in 2016 and 2019 while known as a man called Adam Graham. Bryson now identifies as a woman and is in the process of starting gender reassignment.” The viewers took issue with the fact the rapist was referred to as a woman, and female pronouns used, when Bryson did not have a gender recognition certificate. The BBC refused to uphold the complaints but said the wording used in the programme was “not ideal”. The ruling said: “The ECU considered whether the programme met BBC standards of accuracy. The ECU agreed the opening line was not ideal (subsequent bulletins referred to ‘a trans woman’). However, it did not agree audiences had been misled on a material point. Anyone watching the programme would have been in no doubt as to the gender identity of Bryson at the point at which the crimes were committed. “The report made clear that the purported gender change postdated the crimes — and that treatment for gender reassignment only started after Bryson had been charged with rape. “Notwithstanding the tension between the requirement to report accurately while using appropriately inclusive language, it was a matter of fact that Bryson was convicted as a woman.” Bryson was remanded to Cornton Vale women’s prison after being convicted of raping two women while living as a man. The case led to an urgent review and a change in policy that will mean all newly convicted or remanded transgender prisoners will initially be placed in jails according to their birth sex. People can pretend all they like or adopt the lifestyle they want but there should never be a legal status other than that defined by the sex they are born with.
