Gersnet Rangers All-time XI | Day 7: Attacking-midfield

Recommended Posts

Gazza was worth his wait in gold as the saying goes but Ian McMillan must have been worth his wait in platinum can you just imagine him playing on these manicured surfaces that we play on today .

The wee prime minister was everything a footballer should be he was perfect .

Ian McMillan.

Not great in the air, didn’t track back. Doesn’t matter. Immaculate passer of the ball to unlock the defence.

Not sure if he was an out and out attacking midfield on paper (he was in games I felt) but that treble winning season Barry had under Eck was the best individual season a players had for us imo, against a more than decent (agricultural) Celtic team.

Still baffled to this day that he got a move to Blackburn off the back of it.

My old man would counter that Brand, Millar and, Forrest scored McMillan's goals, he made three Rangers players.

Four. Alex Scott the major beneficiary of McMillan’s passing skills.

This is going to be interesting when it comes to the forward line. Apart from McCoist and Laudrup, it's hard to see anyone from the last 45 years getting a look in. And I still can't accept Robertson in place of Caldow.

I'm shaping up this way ...... 5 from the NIAR era, 4 from the great 60s side and 2 from the 70s treble winners. And zip from the last 25 years, which might be better represented by Egil Ostenstad 😉

Laudrup? - McCoist - Henderson?

Baxter - McDonald? - Greig

Robertson Caldow - Butcher - Gough - Jardine

Gascoigne is currently shading it, but this is a much tighter vote than I anticipated.

Gazza could do really amazing things. He just did them too infrequently and for too short a time to ever be considered the best ever in any position.
